Breeding puppies to explain the "facts of life" to kids? Seriously?

I was chatting with a friend who just got an adorable puppy from a neighbor who had, according to my friend, deliberately allowed their pet to become pregnant so they could show their young children the "facts of life". I was kind of stunned, as this seemed a pretty silly and irresponsible way to teach sex education. How can they be sure they'll find good homes for all the results of this demonstration? I don't know if they'll be using their dog for further "life lessons", but I got the impression it was likely.

As a rescue shelter volunteer who strongly supports "spay and neuter", this story really steamed me. Anyone else heard of this kind of "sex education"? Is it common, do you think?

...about "the birds and the bees."

Actually, I think that's a fabulous idea!
Having pets also teaches kids to deal with death.

I'm talking about bringing more potentially unwanted puppies into the world in order to explain where babies come from. I managed to teach my three kids without any puppy litters at all.

Around here. While I'm not against object lessons when they are available, I understand your frustration at people putting more puppies into the world with uncertain futures.

Are they at least a kind that will find (hopefully good) homes?

But I am sure if they tire of the joyous fun of it all, and they get tired of trying to find homes for the pups, I'll be helping to deal with the aftermath at the shelter.

As for the pup, it has no akc papers, but appears to be mainly golden retriever.

People breeding dogs around here. One sign makes me irrationally angry, in particular. "A Puppy for You! Shiba Inus! Puppies always available!"

I occasionally see the same three people walking big, poorly leash-trained dogs. It makes me so angry, but there's nothing I can do about it.

One of my adopted furbabies was sheltered because of a 3rd rate breeder of "puggles" who was shut down by the cops on zoning violations. I don't know what the laws in your area are, but you never know.

with the kids. I would prefer to find the film they showed me in ninth grade health class of a woman in delivery.....kept me from ever wanting children!

I am not sure that this is the only reason that they let their dog get pregnant. People can be idiots, especially people who do not pay attention to things like pet overpopulation or the numbers of unwanted pets. I have heard so many stupid reasons---it will make the dog more mellow, I don't have the money to fix her (or him), it will teach the kids responsibility, newborn puppies are so cute, and now....it will teach the kids about the facts of life. They need educated, and they are lucky they didn't offer a puppy to me---they would have had a lot of education.

No need to teach the facts of life. Passing on those genes would be criminal...and I'm not talking about the dogs!

It's disgusting and it's ridiculous. I hear this all the time. I want my children to see the "miracle of birth". Well in the City that we live in, the miracle of birth happens all too often, and is sadly followed by the sadness of these extra puppies and kittens being euthanized because there are not enough homes for them.

We also hear that the dog/cat should have one litter before we get her spayed". Another old wive's tale.

The dog/cat will get fat and lazy after she's spayed. Uh, take your dog for a walk and invest in some toys for your cat.

And the excuses go on and on and on. It's amazing to me how people can live smack dab in the middle of a city that euthanizes literally tens of thousands of animals each year, and act as if they don't even know there is a problem.

Spay and neuter your pets, people. Without exception and no excuse is good enough!

And don't list your dog/cat or puppies/kittens as "free", especially not on Craigslist. This is a smorgasbord for people who want dogs/cat/puppies/kittens for dog fighting bait, as well as many other abuses.

when she had the first litter. Then they kept a female from that litter. Then the first cat had another litter. They said it was an 'oops' and that they'd try to keep her inside or she'd get spayed if there was a next time. The 'new' cat they kept then got pregnant. Then the 'old' cat got pregnant. And they said, "That's it! We're getting them fixed!" Only they didn't. Turns out, they never were going to - too lazy, I guess. Eventually their cats got old and died. Now they have a dog - I have no idea if it's spayed but no litters so far.

I don't understand that mentality. Although I *did* get to see one of the cats give birth once and I thought it was neat. But it's a stupid excuse for breeding your animal, that's for sure. Show your kids one of those websites were you wait for a horse to have a baby on webcam instead. Sheesh.
