http://www.theghostsinourmachine.com/THE GHOSTS IN OUR MACHINE illuminates the lives of individual animals living within and rescued from the machine of our modern world. Through the heart and photographic lens of acclaimed animal photographer Jo-Anne McArthur, we become intimately familiar with a cast of non-human animals. The film follows McArthur over the course of a year as she photographs several animal stories in parts of Canada, the U.S. and in Europe. Each story and photograph is a window into global animal industries: Research; Food; Fashion and Entertainment. The question is posed: Are non-human animals property to be owned and used, or are they sentient beings deserving of rights?

(6,151 posts)Maybe I can fret a little too much sometimes, but I once had a beagle and tried to hawk her every second since we lived in Los Angeles and I've always read that beagles are favored for research, so they're stolen a lot for that. I've certainly never been willing to use cosmetics that were animal-tested.
I'll never quit searching for sentient beings where I retired in RedNeckLand, but at least most of these people wouldn't know where the nearest test lab might be. The meaner ones will happily shoot or poison a dog they don't like, but they won't steal anything but a bird dog because those sell well to hunters. While I'm not sure if Molly Maguire is capable of biting an intruder, oh Bridget now - sweet and friendly as that little Jack Russell Terrierist is, she's also totally fearless and I believe might be a protector as well as an alarm clock. She was determined to save us from the invading fireworks that exploded all around every evening for nearly a week. She rushed to ward off each and every one, convinced it was coming to get us. She's going to be 13" but seems stronger inch for inch than almost any dog I've ever had; or maybe I'm less strong in my old age.
BTW, this year the worst injury I heard of to a human around here was a young man hardly 21 who blinded himself permanently in one eye with a bottle rocket. Will he learn? Probably not. Most likely he will bankrupt himself every year buying bigger and badder fireworks for his own kids to impress everyone with. That seems to be one of the main pathways to social clout. Kids don't have a chance in the pecking order without the yearly orgy of fireworks.

(51,473 posts)through college and into my marriage. Of course, ours was a family farm and my dad was a grain farmer. I'm the one that brought the animals to it because of 4-H projects. My calves and hogs had a grassy field to roam. I named every one of the more than 250 pigs and 4 steers I raised. It was extremely hard to sell them, knowing their fate.
If I sold hogs, I stopped eating pork for 6 or 7 months. If I sold a steer, I stopped eating beef. So, I'm not much of a meat eater even today, but not vegan either.
I've always said that cows have the most beautiful eyes of any creature.
