hypertheroid cat med

methimazole, liquid form, ~$43, chicken flavor, is going on his breakfast kibble. So far, he is scarfing it down. Pills would have been impossible for him and me to do. So far, worth it, Follow up, next month.

Our cat is on hyperthyoid med as well. Our vet gave us a compounding pharmacy that turns it into a gel you can spread in their ears. It beats a pill, but I think in the food might be easier.

Majik is the planets most skittish cat...it's 1:40 est and I KNOW I wont see him till dinner, then after those 5 minutes, not till tomorrow am, 530. I did think about the eargel .....but food is a big big motivator for him. sbhmed.com is the local pharm, hope this helps. Kind regards Iris

I think it is a 10% solution. 1cc a day, via syringe. They usually send a couple syringes, and more if we just ask for them.

Cost $14.22 is for 120 tablets, to be given 1/2 tablet by mouth twice daily. This equates to 12 cents per day cost to medicate a hyperthyroid cat. Tablets are very easily crushed and sprinkled on or mixed in with cat's daily feeding of canned food. I have never had a cat reject food with this medication, problem is keeping the other cats away from it. The 5 mg per day is a very common dose for hyperthyroid cats.

as the ease of doing it this way. Sometimes, that matters. I had a cat on methimazole, and giving the pills was such a stressful thing for both of us. He would not swallow them, we fought and fought, and he would always have the pill in his mouth so long that he would be foaming at the mouth. It was horrible. He refused to touch food with the medication in it, and since he was an apathetic hyperthyroid cat (meaning that he did not even want to eat), getting him to eat was of prime importance.

Yes, I would have paid more for the liquid to go on the food if he would have eaten it. In fact, I did pay more...I had him treated with radioactive iodine.
