Second update on my sick kitty

(BTW his name is Riley. I'd post a photo but don't know how.)

I called the cat hospital to check on him this afternoon. Vet on duty unfortunately is the one (out of three there) who I have NO rapport with. Anyway, he stated that they got the lab results from the abdominal fluid and the results were "inconclusive." I wasn't surprised as it's a bit of a crapshoot anyway. There may or may not be cancer cells in the sample pulled. They do still believe he has cancer and I'm inclined to agree. He said Riley's doing ok, and that I could take him home as they were "just giving him pills anyway" and they'll "show me how to do it". I assume he was referring particularly to the cancer drug Chlorambucil. I'll have to wear gloves and keep it in the refrigerator and stay away from Riley's poop for 48 hours, etc. etc. etc. And I have to see how to get Chlorambucil (has another name begins with L) at the least expensive price, as it's at least $12 a pill. I have lost cats to cancer over the years, but the circumstance was always by the time they were diagnosed they had no quality of life, or there wasn't much could be done medically. Having a cat who is suspected of having cancer but who still has quality of life and some treatment options is a new experience for me. I believe I'll take him home and just do what I can to keep him comfortable (including giving him the 4 medicines) for as long as it lasts and see how it goes.

I always hate that "inconclusive" diagnosis. But you keep doing what you can. I also have had experience with cancer in cats, always when it was too late to treat. I am not sure what I would do in your shoes, but it sounds like it is going well so far. Keep Riley happy and healthy as long as you can. As long as he is feeling well, keep it up.

interestingly, last Monday I was expecting to have him PTS on Tuesday because of the way one of the other vets phrased the situation -it won't be easily treatable, how far do you want to go with this? etc. I didn't think bringing him home was even possible. Then on Tues. I call up and the other vet tells me "Riley's doing fine"; he's "perky". That I figured was because of all the medical treatment and it made it harder for me to decide to put him down because he in the words of the second vet, "he doesn't act sick." Also I do have a lot of questions, having Googled Chlorambucil. But, I'll bring Riley home and when he starts acting sick, then it'll be time and I'll be more at peace with euthanasia.

That you took him to the vet hospital, and that you figured he would not make it. I am so glad that he is not acting sick. Of course you do not want to put him down until it is apparent that the quality of life is suffering. When you think about humans with cancer, think about how many times they are fine when they first are diagnosed when it is caught early. I would not want to put down a pet until I know it is time---and we always do. Of course, I always wait a little too long, but that is me being selfish or delusional.

Just take him home and love him.

tests showed his cbc (or rbc?) was at 10 which was very anemic. He got a transfusion at the 24/7 clinic and stayed overnight.

Monday Feb. 10 I brought him to the regular vet and that vet was very alarmed. But, his blood # then went up to 16 maybe because of the transfusion. They later decided to aggressively treat him for Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia. However, by Friday Feb. 14 it had dropped to 14 and it stayed at 14 over the weekend. By Monday Feb. 17 I was told it had dipped to 8. The other vet who was more "optimistic" I guess on Tuesday Feb. 18 told me she switched the steroid - then on Wed. Feb. 19 it back up to 16. That gave me some (false) hope that it wasn't cancer. I always feared that it was, though. Taking him home will help both of us.

Riley home. Of course I'm still hoping that it isn't cancer, but if it is, I hope it progresses slowly and he is able to enjoy life with you for a long while.

I'm sending him healing vibes
