Any Yorkie owners here?

Looks like we're keeping our rescue after all. 3 and 1/2 y.o ( est). Pretty well-socialized... considering he's had multiple disruptions. He's in a good mood 90% of the time.

He's been known to "nip" .... which may explain the "rescue" saga. Haven't seen any of that in the first two weeks.

What impresses me ( and challenges me) is his attention gluttony. It's all about HIM all the time. Can't even distract him with a chew toy or looking out the window.

He's only interested in looking at.... and being stroked ( and FED, of course) by.... his humans. *Constantly*.

How does one cope with that?

Seems like he's psychologically pretty typical of the breed ... judging from what I read on line.

But is there any way to..... I dunno.... loosen him up a bit?

i would get some forage toys like a kong wobbler, or a leerburg green feeder. dont feed him from a bowl. make him forage for his food.

let him spend some extended time in a crate with some chew toys.

but, yeah, you got yourself a little ball and chain.
hope you pitching arm is strong.

really terriers just wanna have fun.
find the toys he loves, and learn to play.
if he doesnt fetch, try a flirt pole.

also, teach him tricks. mine know a few, and when they really have to have my attention, i sit them down, make them shake hands, lay down, roll over sit, up. ok done, mommie has to go back to work.

that keeps them happy for a while.

He tugs ad infinitum. Can't get enough. He'll fetch the tug toy after I toss it, but only to bring it back for more serious tugging!

He won't play "chase". He'd rather I catch him and try to pull the toy out of his mouth.

I'll look into the flirt pole. My friend agrees a Kong Wobbler is a good investment for this one. I'll get one tomorrow.

Tricks: He's pretty smart. I think there's potential there. My son is going to be in charge of that.

don't let him be in front of you -- only beside or behind. a game of fetch.
Let him get tired. When he learns that you won't abandon him, he will settle down.

He can play and vent. I can read and schmooze.

not the hugest fan. a good thing, unfortunately used by humans, really, not dogs.
people think there is a fence, so it doesnt matter if the dog is trained.
with a tiny dog like that, i would want to be positive that he is gonna come at top speed if i call him. he'd be a nice little bite for some ill mannered big dog before you could stop it.

have him coming to his new name at least before you let him anywhere off leash, unless it is empty.
if is also a problem to take treats to a dog park. you dont want to start a food fight.

have fun with him. he will repay you with more loyalty that you can imagine fits in that little body.

10. I'm sure my dog has yorkie in her

definitely some kind of small terrier. She's 3.5lbs. She looks like a yorkie, but is black. We were told she was maltese/poodle but she has none of those traits in her at all. The vet thinks yorkie for sure. What you described for personality is my dog exactly too - I've had yorkie owners come up to me to comment on how much she reminds them of their dog, personality-wise. She loves attention and must be at-my-side-every-moment-of-the-day. She was super high strung when we got her (as a puppy so no trauma AFAIK).

I don't really have any advice. Time worked for us. Once she trusted us, she was pretty easy. She scares easily, so I'm very gentle with her (no raised voices, ever, and gentle hands - no picking her up without letting her know in advance, no tugging on her leash). So we only use body language to discipline her and she's very smart so it works just fine. This is very different from my last dog, who was the biggest sweetheart but somewhat dense (he was a maltese/cockapoo cross).

Well, congrats on your new family member, I hope things even out I'm sure it will just take some time.

There was no putting it off. I was amazed he didn't bite me.

Wow... when he came out that bath he was kah-razzzzzzzEEEEEEE.

Lots of dogtreats got him thru it.

(How's your pooch w. feeding? Mine needs bland, no additives-type stuff. So I limit the treats to a bare minimum to avoid regurgitation and assorted gastro unpleasantness.)

He needs his hair cut and and nails trimmed. I'm out-sourcing that ... thank you very much.... after what I saw last nite

Mother o' god.

Mine hates baths but she's so tiny that it takes but a few minutes. She's crazy when she comes out too, but we've trained her to wipe her ears on a towel spread on the floor (she goes nuts rubbing her ears all over after), so she'll do that with enthusiasm for 5 minutes or so then we blow dry her. I've been able to trim her nails just fine, but only because she's so tiny, I can cradle her and hold her paw steady with one hand and trim with the other. We started her really young so that's probably why. I also cut her hair on my own, but she must have some other breed in her because she sheds...but her hair grows too. ugh. So weird. It's pretty thin and wiry though, so pretty easy to cut. There aren't any good grooming places around here (my mom takes her dog to all of them in the continuous search for 'the one' and they all do nothing more than shave her dog bald) so I'd prefer to do it myself.

For food we feed her some supposedly 5-star grain-free stuff w/salmon. I forget the name (she's so small I've only bought one bag of adult food so far). Thankfully, so far, she has a pretty strong stomach compared to other small pooches I've had. We do limit the table food though, because she does get the runs easily with that. We bought some dentabone-type treats for her once and never again. 4 days straight of accidents every 10 minutes. omg. On my bed in the middle of the night even (LOL, I was so mad I thought about packaging it up and sending it to the treat company.) But in general, she doesn't have very many problems with gastro stuff. I've heard small dogs are really bad for gastrointestinal problems and that's held true with the ones I've known. My previous pooch vomited regularly, but he had a bad habit of cleaning food off the floor and whatever else happened to be there too. Mind you, my brother has a lab that must eat at regular intervals or she vomits bile, every single day. yeah, I don't volunteer to dog sit much, LOL. Every dog is so individual that way.

We're all set up for groomer; tomorrow at 10 am. They better not " shave him bald" as he's got a beautiful coat.... it's just too long and thick ( I'm thinking) for the hot-weather season. Also he cant see.

70 bills this local independent groomer is charging me. OMG! For "full treatment" including nails. I can't deal w. Pet Co ( the local corporate chain in this area).... which, I understand... will do it cheaper. Another bureaucracy.

Maybe after a while I'll work up the courage to cut him on my own. After all... I survived the bath! In fact, we both did.
