Princess Peanut has a Mast Cell Tumor/update#2

Last edited Wed Oct 8, 2014, 09:19 AM - Edit history (1)

She will be having surgery on Monday, September 15. She is 13 or 14, since she was a rescue, I'm not too sure. Her favorite vet, the only other human she has 'hugged'....standing up on rear legs and putting the fromt legs on the humans waist....Dr Mugge will be doing the surgery. I am a little freaked out. So, outside of Dr Google what can you teach me. Thank you Irisblue
**10/1/14 update
Peanuts' Pathology report showed 60x20" mm sized (2.4x 3/4 inch) , completely excised with clean margins (it wasn't attached to underlying muscles or bones, just to the overlying skin, and Dr Muggee got all the visible tumor). This puts her in the Grade2 w/o lymph node involvement. 80% of all dogs fall into this group, so the odds of long term, 2+yrs are very good. Peanut is 13, mixed greyhound/lab/mystery mix, she is~50#. The fact that she is here today and active, loving, playful is pure gold. This type of cancer is influenced by Histamines, (kinda like human runny nose), so her treatment will be benedryl, prednisone & generic Prilosec. The pred & Benadryl will be treating the inflammatory response by her body that helped the cancer grow , the Prilosec is to keep her stomach settled, she is an easy puker, often at 3am.
The surgical drain and sutures came out only slightly chewed, the scar looks good, healing nicely. She has had several lumps over the years so a body site map was done, so if there are any new lumps, they will be recognized.
I worked in human cancer care for many years, so I know a bit more then most, this is a good/bad thing for me. I expect I will have a few freak outs. But today she is supervising the street on her bed in a sunny patch, life is good.
update#2 10/8/14....well meds are not sitting well, she had diarrhea yesterday, called vet, dropped pred to 15mg from 20(pill splitter usage is a skill) this am before breakfast she vomited blood, called the vet and likely we'll be there later today. So, no breakfast, one tablespoon cool tap water. more later

about her condition, but my healing thoughts are with Princess Peanut and those who love her. I hope the surgery goes well and is completely successful, and her recovery swift. Blessings.

My friends dog was just diagnosed with this . Her dog is seven, lives in South Carolina and had her tail cut off several weeks ago. She had had the spot for a year with two vets eyeballing it and saying it was nothing. The third vet biopsied it and removed the tail....go figure. When I hear what the reports say I will drop you a note. For now the dog seems to be recovering quickly!

Give your dogger a big hug and extra love. I send you healing love! Peace, Kim

Considering Princess Peanut's age, most vets would be reluctant to perform surgery unless they were convinced that there would be at least a decent chance of a good outcome.

Good luck to you and your sweet fur kid!

The tumor was not adhering to the underlying ribs or muscle, the in office sampled were lymph nodes were clear, so yeah! She and I might haved lucked out. The pathologist at the vet school will stage & grade, so I 'll have final info then. ( Cat didn't like me crying into her fur tho. Cat also doesn't like the dog)

she ate some of the cats breakfast kibble, then she decided to remove her surgical drain, I guess it was itchy. After the am kibble scarfing (Majik cat was very very upset) I placed a kids t shirt on her and duct taped the lower edge on the shirt so she couldn't nibble at the lower edge of her surgical drain....being itchy, by human guess, she decided to remove the top of the drain. Busted again. She is now wearing her Elizabethian collar (part greyhound) and is now clipped to a hook on my jeans with her 10 foot lead. She does something, anything, I know that second. She is sulking, she hates that collar. I am a bit nervous about the drain in her surgical wound picking up anything Cephlaxin cannot kill/ getting dirty/her pulling it out cause she is itchy.
Dogs, gosh I love them.
