Beware of 4-legged financial scam

A new online financial scam is hoping that your care for animals will lead you to be careless with your hard-earned savings.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, online thieves are posting advertisements for dogs and other pets who need loving homes. Many of the ads include sob stories that will make any animal-lover want to rescue a would-be furry friend. Once a customer agrees to pay for the pet, he or she will receive additional requests for common expenses such as vet bills, crating, shipping and inspection costs. There's just one problem: The pet never comes home.

Don't give to a person or group if you are not sure.

There are plenty of rescues and shelters with good critters. They can also use any donations, whether money, supplies or time.

My favorite local pet food store is having a give-away, where if you buy a bag of pet food (the price is at their cost), they will match your donation.

If I can afford it, I may decide to participate today.

Now, off to buy cat food.

These scammers are lower than a pregnant snake's belly. They have been preying on grandparents with sob stories about their grandchildren. They hit on people desperate for love. They will con people who are overweight or have some illness. And of course there are the people who want to win money in a lottery.

We were a group ready for the picking. They have milked everyone else to the point that it isn't working anymore.
