She is a three-year-old mixed-breed. We adopted her from the Washington Animal Rescue League. They think she is part Dalmation and part Pointer. I think there are lots of other breeds mixed in as well. She was rescued from a shelter in Mississippi and brought up to DC. She is a really good girl -- very gentle, happy, and good with kids. Her tail is always wagging!
She's also semi-famous. For the last few weeks while she was in the shelter at the Washington Animal Rescue League, she and her puppies were featured on the Animal Planet Puppy cam. You can still watch her puppies there, but alas Rosie is no longer with them. (While she was in the shelter her name was Ellie Mae, and the animal planet website still shows her old name. But there is another dog named Ellie Mae literally right across the street from us, so we decided to give her a new name.) We did not know she was on the puppy cam until after we adopted her.

(102,292 posts)Hardly a happier day than when you welcome a new cutie pie to the family and I love the name ROSIE....
I have a bit of a famous pup myself, in that she appeared on the front page of the local newspaper in a story covering the need for a new shelter--which eventually lead to a successful bond referendum to build. The story came out a day or so after I'd adopted her and a dog park buddy who had recognized her clued me in. She looks so woe-begone in that pic-- and I like to think her sweet face convinced a few readers-- but that surely belies her "spunkiness" --LOL. She is blue merle Australian Shepherd-Border Collie.

Happy days!

Have fun with your new baby!

(18,636 posts)That you rescued her at a shelter is very telling. I imagine she'll now live a life of a puppy lottery winner.
She probably doesn't care what you call her, as long as you call her for dinner and hugs. hahaha

(70,127 posts)but are you sure about those breeds? she doesnt look that big. looks like a terrier to me. like a little jack mix. lot of them have the eye patch.
either way, hope someone in the family is a jogger. seems like all spotty dogs are high energy.

(63,645 posts)But shelters are reluctant to say that, I think.
but she is so darned cute.
how big is she? she looks pretty small.
Skinner
(63,645 posts)Perfect size.
mopinko
(70,127 posts)but with some pitty mixed in, maybe. that is a nice size for a dog, tho i like mine a little bigger. have 2 100lb bullies, and to me that seem just right, not THAT big. but everyone else tells me they are huge.
sounds like a great pup. how does she like the kids?
Skinner
(63,645 posts)And the kids have been good with her.
TorchTheWitch
(11,065 posts)The shape of her face especially that slope from forehead to snout looks like some pitty to me. My next door neighbor's new puppy is some lab and some pit (and maybe some other things) and has that same shape to his face, but he's got more of the boxy snout than Rosie...
Rocko sitting on his throne...
When they got him from the shelter they didn't say anything about his being a pit mix, but the neighbors knew it anyway just looking at him.

(63,645 posts)Yes, we adopted her yesterday.

(11,589 posts)We went to a 4 places yesterday, Animal Welfare league of Arlington, AWL of Alexandria, WARL and then the Washington Humane Society (We went there because we had a hankering for some food at Union Market. ) Saw WAY too many wonderful dogs, I was overwhelmed.
I think we *may* have found a baby that we are going to go back and try to meet today. He's not ready for adoption quite yet, but I think we might be able to meet him when things aren't as busy at the shelter.
She's beauty! I am hoping to make an announcement soon in this group myself!
Skinner
(63,645 posts)Are you looking at a puppy? If so it might be one of Rosie's.

(11,589 posts)We'd rather have a dog that is a little more mature puppies are adorable, but our place is a townhouse and I want to know the size of the dog before we bring him or her home.

(2,977 posts)with mixed breeds. It seems, more times than not, they get the best of other breeds. Our worst dogs were so-called pure bred, they were never smart enough to last long at country living.

(6,011 posts)Congratulations on adopting the new member of your family!
I looked at the puppy cam for a while just now. There seems to be only one puppy left, a male they call Greenbean, black with a white chest and feet. He's so cute.; he plays with the ball by himself, hears someone outside the door in the hall (?) and goes up to it expectantly. The people chatting about the pups aren't sure if Chestnut, a brindle pup, is in another room or being adopted.
If I lived nearby I'd go and ask if I could play with the lonely Greenbean..
I'd love to see someone fall in love with this little guy today.
On edit: Yay! A guy is adopting Greenbean this afternoon, or when they open again Tuesday...

(81,322 posts)I love rescue pets. They're the best! And they seem to know they've been rescued and given a wonderful new life. Our Goldie sure behaves that way. The cats? Well, they're cats.

(22,651 posts)Try the canine DNA tests to see her main breeds, sometimes you will be very surprised at what breeds a dog really is She does look like a pointer/dal (except by the picture) she has an even shorter coat then both of those breeds.
I've used the Canine Wisdom Panel 2.0 DNA test on my mutts and have been very surprised!

(27,985 posts)It's usually very easy to get the kids adopted but the mom's often don't get adopted. Not that you needed to worry about your karma totals, they went up significantly here.
Congrats to the whole family.
The name change reminds me of what I did with one of my strays. She was chipped but her family moved to Dallas and she was left behind or lost and we couldn't reunite them. But we knew her name. It was Tiffany. The dog was very sweet but I hated the name Tiffany and yet felt like I couldn't take her name away. But, by stealth, I changed it. Over a few months, I started calling her Tiffaroo, then Tiffaroonie and then finally Roonie. She was quite happy to answer to Roonie and looking back, I suspect I did too much work. She was such a love bug, she probably would have responding to anything as long as it meant love and attention.
