Beware the Beagle!!!

CHEVY CHASE, Md. — A BEAGLE, Miss P, was the surprise winner of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on Tuesday. What a perfect name for a beagle! Our beagle was Sasha, but we could have called her Miss Pee, because the only solution to our decade-plus struggle to housetrain her was to take away all the rugs.

Miss P is, of course, adorable. Beagles embody adorableness, with those soulful eyes, that sprightly gait. But to those of you who, inspired by Miss P, are thinking of getting a beagle puppy, let my experience be a warning. I had so many experiences with Sasha that I wrote a book about her endless capacity for mayhem.

He loved that dog, but would never have another one. He said it was stubborn about everything, and refused to go out to pee when it was cold. Housebreaking was an issue, lol.

She was a great dog. Though it took me a long time to house break her.

She was raised in a kennel and thought concrete was where she should do her business. If there was no concrete then hardwood floors and carpet would do in a pinch. She found the concept of using grass for her toilet as quite primitive. Where our other 2 dogs went on the tall grass out on the field, she went on the lawn where clean up was required.

But she was the perfect size to have in a house and she always was willing to help clean up any food spills.
