Related: About this forumSince my little Jack Russel Terrier Pixel passed away the winter before last, I knew the yard
was too empty. We had 15 good years together and she was a brilliant little girl that always knew just how to keep me going during the hardest of times.
Since my wife died and I became too ill to work, things had been nearly unbearable, it is safe to say that Pixel was the only reason on more than one occasion that I didn't kill myself, with my wife gone and no money to make ends meet, the constant threat of homelessness and the deep sadness that has only grown deeper with each passing day since the loss of my wife - a little dog kept me going, and I will always be grateful to her for that.
After Pixel died of a stroke, I thought I would never have such a friend again, that is, until just before April when a cousin of mine (the cousin that always meddles in my affairs due to concern) turned me on to a link that took me to a page detailing the problems of a very young Dog in need of rescue, a little Jack Russel that was impregnated far too young even if more unwanted animals were needed in a world where kill shelters move at a drastic pace ending the lives of so many.
She was only 11 months old when she was put up for adoption by the rescue center, having already had and weened her 9 (yes 9) pups. I was told by her rescuer that all were healthy and homes were being found for them, but Jackie had seen few prospects as many can not handle the energy and tenacity of her breed.
She was turned away by her original owner after finding out her other dog had impregnated her (neither was fixed obviously). She took her to a kill shelter but luckily Barb who generally rescues dogs from irresponsible breeders found her and took her in to foster her through the pregnancy and find homes for all. I can not say enough good things about Barb. She is a saint.
Through a fund raised by my meddlesome cousin (who felt I needed Jackie as much as she needed me) I was able to adopt her and give her a chance to be the baby for a while, having to be a mother too young, she never had much of a puppyhood. After she recovered from both her pregnancy and her spay operation, I took her home at the end of April and we are both reaping the benefits of a new friendship. She was unsure at first, appearing to think every attempt to go for a walk or even being let in the yard without me walking right beside her was a trick to take her somewhere away, somewhere new, now she finally trusts her new home and feels secure for likely the first time in her life. She is rather obsessively attached to me, but I don't mind. If my presence makes her feel secure then I am more than happy to be the focus.
She is a good little dog, still unsure of strangers and other dogs, but now that shew feels secure, I am confident she can be fully socialized even if it takes a bit of time.
Here are a few pics of my poor forsaken for a teenage pregnancy new found friend Jackie:

(3,547 posts)And those eyes? So intelligent and wise.
I love jacks! Yes, they are quite active lil' dogs, but they are also very clever, communicative, amusing and charming!
I was very moved by your post, but we share a love of JRT's!
Here is my fella (Billy):

(10,622 posts)It is as you say about Jacks, they are energetic, clever as hell and are quite charming. I have had a few over the years, I could tell you stories of monkey shines and shining virtue that few not familiar would believe, but since you are close to one I don't have to tell you anything.
Right now Jackie has decided that I need to stop typing and keeps dropping her ball on the keyboard, her way of saying it is time to play and the stupid laptop is just boring anyway. She is now doing the meerkat thing on two legs with thew ball in her mouth and that "I dare you to take my ball look".
I guess it's time to go in the yard and burn off some of that excess energy. LOL.

(3,547 posts)but our Billy has (several times now) managed to close our laptops with his paws when he's decided we've been paying more attention to the "boxes" than to him.
Once or twice....that could be a coincidence. Several times? Not a coincidence - he's doing it deliberately.
lol...they're wonderful little dogs.
Best of luck to you and Jackie! So glad to hear she's coming out of her shell, and that she has a nice backyard to play in.

(10,622 posts)I had to change the knobs to a round version to keep his monkey shines to a minimum during the night when he would ninja into the study in search of "unauthorized" toys.
PSA Door handles proven not to be JRT proof unless locked
The little guy could even, (with much more effort), open the doors sometimes with the new handles, but it was so much more difficult and rarely successful that he started working on other off books projects like tunneling under the fence instead. A project that was so well thought out, that once he realized I was placing field stones in his excavation sites as I discovered them to make further progress impossible, he started dragging branches over the new sites in an attempt to hide the work - it was not very effective as I could see what he was trying to do, but it was a really clever attempt at a solution to aid his new project.
They are a very smart breed and tenacity is too small a word to describe how they approach something they want to do, they keep trying different things until something works, relentless intelligence has it's rewards.
Billy knows exactly what he is doing closing your laptops, he does not want those boring stupid things taking time away that could better be spent playing with him.
As another poster in this thread said, it takes a special kind of person to deal with terriers as some people find their monkey shines annoying where we find them endearing.

(20,196 posts)He started when he was 3 months old or so. He watched me every time I would open the door. One day I saw him jump up and hang on the door handle until it clicked. Then he put his nose down at the bottom and just pushed pushed pushed until it opened. Eventually he got big enough that he could do it flat footed. Good old Spaz!

(70,120 posts)it takes a certain kind of heart and brain to love and appreciate a terrier.
i have 2 ratties, and they are adorable little monsters. so naughty sometimes, but so sure that i hung the moon.
glad you got a new pup. i have no idea how people can live without dogs, and fervently hope i will never find out.
and good on your cousin. years ago when the dog i dragged home then left behind to be my mom's best friend died (on xmas eve), my sisters were all furious at me that i went out and got her a pup the next day. i kept him for the first few months till he was house broken and somewhat trained. he was her buddy for the next 15 years, till she had to go into assisted living. i took him back for his remaining few years. it was the least i could do for all that he did for her.
everyone should have a dog.

(9,298 posts)Dragonfli, you have such a beautiful little girl there, and couldn't be happier for you. You can be sure she had your address in her back pocket all along. What came to my mind immediately was a song that I hope isn't too awfully maudlin to celebrate your finding each other. Enjoy.

(711 posts)"Who rescued who?"
Its great that little Jackie has been such a great help to you, and its great that you took her out of a rescue situation. I've rescued several, and it is absolutely amazing to watch them grow into the wonderful, loving dogs that they were meant to be.

(51,907 posts)Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.
I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldnt be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didnt want her to know that I hadnt been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didnt want her to think poorly of them.
As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldnt feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someones life.
She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.
Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.
I would promise to keep her safe.
I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.
I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who havent walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.
I rescued a human today.

(10,622 posts)changed and now reminds me of how my Pixel used to look at me.
Here is Pixel from her puppy days, long before we went through hell and back together.
When Jackie looks at me now, I can't help gut see a bit of what I saw in Pixels eyes when she looked at me (it nearly makes me cry in a sad, happy way)

(205,467 posts)And I am so sorry to hear about Pixel.
But I am so glad that you found a new companion, especially one who needed you, too. She's adorable and looks so happy now! Thanks so much for sharing pix!
I also have a Jackie, a "pet shop dog" who ended up in rescue because of a health problem, a hernia that was repaired when he was neutered, and it certainly never slowed him down, LOL. He just celebrated his 9th birthday.
