I wanted to share some info that might save a bird or two

I just had a Western Tanager fly into one of my windows yesterday, and I thought he wasn't going to make it, but after a few hours of recovery, he did finally fly away. I did some research, and three of the windows on my house are a problem for birds at certain times of the day, because they can see windows on the other side of the house, so it looks like a flight path through the house. This is the second Western Tanager that I've saved from this.

Now I did what I read on line, and I hope this will solve the problem. I taped up bird netting across those three windows (on the outside). I can still see through the windows, but the birds can see the netting and will no longer fly into the glass, thinking it's a flight path. and the netting will also serve as a cushion for the humming birds that sometimes hit the windows when chasing each other. They don't usually take a direct hit, but I worry about them just the same.

It's not a pretty fix, but it's just for summer. I don't have bird problems in the winter...most of the smaller song birds take off for winter.

The Western Tanager is one of the most beautiful birds out here, and I'm so glad I haven't killed one yet by not having something on the windows.

It's funny, he dropped unconscious on the porch, four feet from a reclining cat, who is an avid hunter...but because he wasn't moving, she didn't pay any attention to him. I was able to get to him in time.

Tape up a silhouette of a falcon or owl ... eppur_se_muova Jul 2015 #1
I knew that was an option, but passiveporcupine Jul 2015 #2
Check the 2nd link -- those are UV-opaque -- visible to birds, nearly transparent to human eyes. nt eppur_se_muova Jul 2015 #3

I really didn't want to have to look at big black silhouettes on my windows (or take the time to make them). I like the bird netting better, because you can barely see it and your views are not blocked. It actually blocks your view less than window screens do.
