How common is parvo? and how cautious do we need to be?

I have always heard the standard line about not putting your puppy on shared/public ground before 12 weeks of age but I have never heard of a dog getting parvo.

The only things I have found online said that it is most common in Texas, California and Florida and that there are no statistics kept.

My nephew had 2 dogs die of parvo, both from the local shelter. once he bought them, they would not take them back or help pay for the treatments, they just wanted to kill them. That would be North Carolina

he paid for the treatment but the dogs were too far gone. Still can't believe the shelter did not test them for it before adopting them out. But it was city run, not run by a charity.

Raccoons, for example. Not sure if it can be passed to dogs, but I was warned about my cats the one time when I helped transport a distemper raccoon to a wildlife center. My cats have had shots, and the animal was in a carrier covered with towels, but I still cleaned out the back of my wagon with bleach solution and changed my clothes.

He had had the vaccine several months before. The vaccine company paid for his treatment. Small dogs are most susceptible and your yard could be infected for some time.

It's a big deal. I have seen the Vet ER hospital pour bleach on the floor when a very sick dog came in one night, (I was there w/ Majik cat who was having a urinary issue. B/C I have an very old dog w/ mast cell cancer, they asked me to wipe off the bottom of my shoes. No problem for me to do that, I would not want to carry anything home.

It's especially deadly to young puppies. It's very contageous.

They have treatments for it now but it's very expensive.

Was in news back in March, 2009. There was much notice given to it around Chicagoland and an outpouring of sympathy for Oprah at the time.

One of two puppies adopted by Oprah Winfrey this month has died. Winfrey adopted an 8-week-old blond cocker spaniel from PAWS Chicago and introduced the puppy, named Sadie, to her TV audience on her March 6 show. She also brought out three of Sadie's littermates, one of which she subsequently adopted and named Ivan. Several days later, Ivan became ill with the highly contagious parvovirus. A spokeswoman for Winfrey's Harpo Productions confirmed Tuesday that Ivan died...
