Need recommendations for cat scratching deterrents for new furniture.

So I'm about to buy new living room furniture and one of my cats likes to scratch on the furniture. I haven't used any deterrents before since I had inexpensive slip covers on the other furniture and they had become a bit tattered anyway. But now, with this new furniture that I LOVE, I do not want her marring it.

I found some plastic things you can put on with furniture pins and some sticky tape stuff as well. I'm little worried about the holes the pins would make and also the tape residue. Any suggestions?

And as far as any sort of spray goes, are those effective?

Thanks for any advice. I figure DUers would have the best info.

and found both fairly effective. You have to spray every couple of days (or more I have 4 cats but only one really scratches like that) and if you don't they will go right back to it but still, it seemed to work pretty well. The tape is a pain but they did hate it so it worked then I could not find it again for a while. I think I had the habit broken, I have tons of scratch places for them, but one of the cats just seems to like the furniture better and if I don't keep up it gets ragged over night. I will be replacing two chairs because of him but it is my fault for not keeping up and I love him so......

but the material is rough not smooth, it might leave residue if you have smooth upholstery. I also used it on some wood door frames because one of the cats thought it was fun to claw his way to the top of the slider . It did leave a residue on the wood. We ended up covering that part of the frame with a board covered with a carpet scrap that worked with the colors of the room and screwed it to the frame. He hangs off it and when it gets ragged we just unscrew it and recover it and put it back up. <--Just in case you have a climber too.

The spray is No Scratch by Pet Organics. I suspect it was bought at PetSmart but not sure. The active ingredients are Clove and Garlic oil and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. I could not smell it but they must. It did not leave any marks on this fabric but like I said it is knobby and multi colored. I would sure test it on a swatch if you can.

In case anyone else has this problem we also got No Mark from the same company and it is fabulous. We have all male cats. Two were rescued when young so were not much on marking but the last two are tamed ferals. One was 6 years hanging around my barn. I fed him but he would not let me come within 10 feet of him until one day. Then after about 6 months he came inside but once inside the same part of the house with the others the marking started with gusto as they learned to work things out. We went through it again , mostly after the newest feral joined the household. I have been really pleased with how well it works.

They have a need to scratch. Give them great alternatives and they will be less inclined to scratch the new furniture.

furniture. She likes baskets as well, like the wicker laundry basket. She just basically thinks she can just feel free to scratch anywhere she wants. The boy is much better about keeping it to the scratchers.

My neighbor apologizes nearly every time she sees me for her cats sleeping on my car's top. I just laugh. A convertible top is a nice soft loft to watch things from. I tell her it doesn't matter how many times I've talked to those cats about it they don't listen - they're cats. The same thing goes for the new furniture that you're getting (for the cat). Find comfort in believing that the cat will listen.

Max would let me put on the claw caps, but when I wasn't looking, he'd come to me with one or more of the caps missing. It turned out that he chewed them off. Ruby, on the other hand, was better with the claw caps.

But now it's all moot because claw caps are useless when they're out in the back yard, where they don't leave.

a cat tree and scratching post for the cats, and some catnip to attract them to the kitty furniture.

Cats don't like the stickiness of the tape, so it's best to put it in the corners, where they seem to like to scratch the most. My cats destroyed my sofa until I put some carpet tape where the evidence was; now they no longer mess with the furniture.

So far so good! I have two pieces of sisal cat furniture for my three cats and they use it constantly. Have had to replace the two pieces 3X now but worth it as they don't scratch the new sofa!

I have also been using Feliway for my old girl whose been having a hard time lately -- think I finally figured out what the problem is though.

Encourage them when they claw the cat furniture and give them a very loud NO if you catch them clawing the new furniture.

Best of luck!
