Imagine you’re a firefighter wearing 70 pounds of gear and combing your way through a house engulfed in flames and smoke. You can barely see the hand in front of your face, yet somehow you manage to locate a pet carrier with an unconscious little body still breathing inside. Seconds count.

In the pre-dawn hours on December 9, sirens split the air on 85th Avenue in Oakland, Calif., as the Oakland Firefighters Local 55 rushed up to a residential fire. With flames licking the facade, the firefighters had no idea how many souls were still inside.

“As the crews attacked the fire under high heat conditions and zero visibility, they simultaneously performed a search as we do at each fire,” a department spokesperson explained on Facebook. “During the search they found a dog crate with a dog inside. Search crew brought the unconscious/unresponsive dog outside and E26 immediately started to provide care to the dog.”

In the past, pets suffering smoke inhalation had a far lower recovery rate, but thanks to the increasing number of departments that carry pet oxygen masks, the likelihood of survival is far greater. Take a look at this amazing video clip of the firefighters in action.
