Got this dude 3 weeks ago today(Sunday). And I am totally amazed how much of a snuggles he is. I named him PJ to honor the kitty I had in Calif. several years ago. He is 8 Y.O. I found that he is a Norwegian Forest Cat-not a tuxedo cat. And he does jump on the bed when I turn out lights. If I pet him enough, he will put his paw on my hand. That required a little Kleenex when he started doing that. I was touched. So I am now his official buddy. He was spending a lot of time under bed in beginning first 2-3 days, but has now has figured out I'm really cool. Still occasionally skittish from sudden noises like sneezing, but not seriously skittish. Only problem is I have to find different scratching post--does not like the rope kind of post. To keep from clawing furniture, I use a 7-Up can with pennies in it and shake it if he claws couch(hates it more than spray bottle). So overall I am thrilled I found a new friend that actually is sociable. Cat I had last year didn't like me too much. So I returned him. Any ideas on scratching post are welcome. I can post some more pics later if you want.

(1,268 posts)The most notable thing in deciding to bring this critter home is when the shelter staff person brought him into the "bonding room" he walked right up to me and putting his face in my hand. Of course lots of rubbing on me too. The lady told me that she thought I had a friend. I went back the following day to make sure I was making the right decision and had him brought into the bonding room again. He came to me again and that's when I said I want to take him with me. But if he is so friendly I can't figure why the previous owner would have him sent to shelter. He just follows me all over.

(205,628 posts)I also have a long haired kitty, found him as a tiny kitten in a grocery store parking lot. In a year and a half he's come a long way, enjoys affection now and he rarely bites anymore. My ideal is for him to someday be as user friendly as yours. And please post more photos when you have them...

(16,402 posts)[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]I inherited an old-fashioned trash can with a swinging door in the half-round lid, and I keep it at the end of the kitchen counter. The base is weighted and very heavy, and I thought of covering it in some kind of natural fiber matting or nubby carpet to make it double as a scratching post.
To see which would work best, I bought a mat made of woven sisal, one of woven hemp, and one of nubby carpet for my cats to do a "test run" on. All can be reused as door mats later, so nothing's wasted.
They've been giving the sisal and hemp mats the most love, so I'm going to buy a length of woven hemp matting (just to support the industrial hemp cause) and hot glue it to the trash can base.
You might do similar test runs for PJ and then cover a post of your choice. You'll spend a bit, but you'll be glad you did if PJ's happy.
Best wishes to you both!

(20,585 posts)If he is a Norwegian Forest Cat he must weigh quite a bit?

(14,691 posts)is that you have to clean up the paper bits as it gets destroyed.
There's a big price range - from under $10.00 to more for the styles designed as "furniture."

(1,268 posts)I forgot all about these on here and remembered after checking my camera for something else. He's under the desk at my foot as I type this.
In this pic, it's almost like he's at the beach laid out for a kitty tan? Hmmm.
