BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- A California fire department says a little white dog named Jack is recovering after firefighters rescued him from a burning home and brought him back to life.
In a video posted to the Bakersfield Fire Department's website that has been widely shared online, firefighter Matt Smith is shown carrying the nearly lifeless shih tzu from the house on Wednesday.
Using a pet oxygen mask donated to the department by a local Girl Scout troop, Smith and his partners slowly bring Jack back to life.
By the end of the video, Jack is sitting up, alert and looking around, though panting heavily. He was then reunited with his worried owners, a married couple who were unharmed by the fire.
"He's my family, he's my guy, he waits for me every night when I come home," said owner Jeff Garnett to CBS affiliate KBAK. " He's going to be fine, we're going to be fine too, I couldn't be more grateful of appreciative for what they've gone."

(4,033 posts)There is so much crap going on these days, that these little doses of good people doing good things are a welcome break. As a dog lover myself (we have 5 currently) these stories really make my day!

(51,609 posts)I can't stand it when an over paid sports player/celebrity is called a hero. There are no similarities at all in my opinion. Does a sports player save a ball from harm and injury for no or little money? NOPE!

(5,106 posts)Talent in any sport or similar activity is a God( if that is what you believe) given or Nature-given talent. Using that talent to utmost affect doesn't make one a "hero." The term has been extended to ridiculous lengths, but it doesn't help that more apropo terms don't exist. Sensational sports physical happenstances are termed heroic, talented cerebral wins at chess are not. I was reminded of current race horse trainer and former Olympic rider Michael Matz. Some might term him a hero for those talents, but his rescue of fellow crash victims was a real life heroic action
