They must be in dire need too.

The Houston Humane Society receives no funding from the city, the county, the state, or from any national animal welfare organizations. We have always depended solely on donations from local people who care about animals and care about the work we continue to do in the greater Houston area and surrounding counties.

(205,357 posts)What happened during Katrina was heart wrenching. It sounds like the need is overwhelming and they need all the help they can get. I have a dog and a cat - both rescue - and I would never leave them behind.

(28,120 posts)I can't watch a movie where a dog dies.
Just tonight I was trying to talk my husband into another rescue. Too many fur babies need homes.

(205,357 posts)And my guys seem to find me. My dog was a "pet shop rescue," a pup who couldn't be sold because he had a health issue. A vet tech who used to work for my vet was helping to foster him and she knew my other dog - the same unusual kind - so she contacted me. Previously, I've adopted senior dogs, but my "puppy" just turned 11.
As for my cat, I found him as a tiny kitten in a grocery store parking lot. I certainly couldn't leave him there, and he's grown into a beautiful cat.
And I can't watch those movies, either. I was determined to avoid "Marley and Me," but it was on TV late one night and I got hooked. I was sorry.
My latest weakness is Twitter. I never did much with it until the DU hack and I ended up "following" animal rescue sites. They rip my heart out and I'm going to have to start avoiding it because I'm tempted to "pledge" for too many animals in need of rescue and I'm going to go broke if I keep it up...

(4,358 posts)SPRING, Texas - A senior retirement community is being rebuilt after suffering major damage during Hurricane Harvey. But it's not what you might think. The home is not for people. It's for dogs - golden retrievers, to be exact.
"In 2012, we were founded as a rescue sanctuary for golden retrievers that are seniors, abandoned, abused, owner surrendered," Radliff said. At the home, "they can live their lives out in peace and happiness."
"This place is heaven for older dogs. They are not in cages, they get to run free." said Kathy Billig with Golden Beginnings Rescue.

(21,716 posts)That is the first shipment. They were dogs that were in the shelter before the hurricane, the shelters want to move them out so they can house the displaced dogs to try to reunite them with their families. I'm sure we will start getting Irma dogs too. The Harvey transport was arranged before Irma hit.

(28,120 posts)Were they Labs, M?
The transport had several different breeds in it, but LRCP took the labs. I think the transport cost was something like 4k, now they are getting vetted. That was a long drive for them!

(21,716 posts)I'm sure we will be getting some pups from Irma too. And I think more from Harvey.

Never used and in its box, which I need to get to someone down here, either to Sterrie, past president, or the vet's office LRCP works with in Yorktown. It would come in handy, I think.
Btw, I just donated online.
