(111,261 posts)It depends entirely on the cat. HRH loved them. Most of my other cats were indifferent or hostile. I had to sneak up on the old tomcat when he was sleeping, cop a feel or two before he woke up. It was usually worth it.

(29,715 posts)Picabo is starting to let me rub his belly AND pick him up! We've been at for about 4 years.

(2,768 posts)belly pets of most kinds were still completely claw-able offenses until about year 8. So you are way ahead of the game.

(29,715 posts)he retracted his claws. At first I thought he had been declawed; but no, he has shredded most of the furniture! He still doesn't really know how to purr. My black cat has a very loud purr motor and Picabo tries to imitate when he is getting his little butt rubbed.
He hid in the basement for about 2 weeks when he first came to us. THen one day he started crying and he came upstairs. The first thing he did was hop up on the bed. It seemed like that must have been his safe place in the previous home. I think they tortured him because he is terrified of being held close.
He is now a very happy kitty and smiles in his sleep when he lays on his back.

After bringing Remy home from the shelter. He spent the better part of 6 months hiding on an out of the way landing. Occasionally I'd go up and get him only to get clawed before he found another bolt hole. He'd come out and prowl around at night to take care of his business and eat.
I had the feeling he was abused wherever he was at before ending up in the shelter. He wasn't much for sitting on the bed or anything but did enjoy sitting on the desk, usually on the keyboard, completely in the way. We came to an agreement. He could stay but I was going to put the keyboard on him instead. He didn't mind too much but it was completely impractical short lived experiment. I eventually learned to type with the keyboard propped against the edge of the desk and the keyboard drawer that I refused to use.
Sadly, he passed on a few years back and I still miss that dude.
