Saving Pets Is Paramount for Many Fleeing Tropical Storm Harvey

By MATTHEW HAAG AUG. 28, 2017

When Joe Garcia spotted a rescue boat on Monday outside his flooded home in Spring, a suburb north of Houston, he pushed a plastic tub of his belongings through chest-high water and loaded it on the boat. Then he returned to his home to grab one more prized possession: Heidi, his German shepherd.

Mr. Garcia, his body soaked, carried Heidi through the rising floodwaters, making sure her head stayed dry, and lifted her to safety on a volunteer’s fishing boat. They were whisked away in a moment captured by a photographer with The Associated Press.

Over the past several days, Tropical Storm Harvey has unleashed breathtaking amounts of rain in the Houston area, paralyzing the region and transforming streets into fast-moving rivers. Thousands of people have been displaced, with many still waiting to be rescued.

When people are plucked to safety, they often take with them the clothes on their backs and the few possessions they can carry. For many people, that includes taking their pets, hoisting them onto boats and into high-water vehicles before riding together to dry ground.

But that is not always the case. Many pets have been left behind, abandoned in homes, chained to trees and left for strangers and animal shelters to round up and rescue. And some animals such as cattle were simply too big to move before Harvey arrived.

Here's one way: donate to The Houston Humane Society, here:

http://www.houstonhumane.org/giving

The Houston Humane Society receives no funding from the city, the county, the state, or from any national animal welfare organizations. We have always depended solely on donations from local people who care about animals and care about the work we continue to do in the greater Houston area and surrounding counties.

Anyone know of others I could donate to?

I also just donated to the SPCA of Texas
and to the Gulf Coast Humane Society thru ActBlue.

Edited to add that I've also donated several items thru Amazon. My biggest donation so far. I hope these pets find their owners again after their rescue.

My heart is breaking for Houston's people and critters.

8. Got this from another rescue list.

For those asking for other places to donate.
Sorry for the formatting. Came to me in a PDF then to text, then to here.

. HSUS' Animal Rescue Team mobilized and is in Texas. Currently we have several
Animal Rescue Team responders on the ground. We are working with local law
enforcement and shelter staff on rescue and response.

. Prior to the Hurricane making landfall, the HSUS worked with local groups to move
shelter animals out of dangerous areas, in particular those in the City of Corpus Christi.
Because of early preparedness and evacuating animals early, the animals needs there
have been met. Our disaster rig arrived yesterday in Southeast Texas, and will be
bringing additional supplies. We have six Memorandum of Understandings (MOUs)
across the state and we are assisting where requested. The SPCA of Texas is one of
our Emergency Placement Partners (EPPs) and has taken in hundreds of animals
already. We will move 200+ animals out of San Antonio starting today to make room in
that shelter for 1,000+ evacuees.

. You can track more progress on the HSUS Texas Facebook page.
https://www.facebook.com/HSUSTexas/

. Wayne's blog post is a great overview of the latest updates on the ground.
https://blog.humanesociety.org/wayne/2017/08/crisis-texas-urgent-call-help-animals-people.html

. You can find answers to further questions here .
http://www.humanesociety.org/news/resources/facts/harvey_faq.html

. A number of you have let me know that you’re willing to drive supplies to Texas and
help, but please do NOT do that. As noted in this FAQ document, “Beyond those trained
responders who were contacted, it is imperative that no one go to the area on their own
or self-deploy. The HSUS won't be able to use those volunteers and there are a lot of
volunteers in state with training that are on standby to help when called. If people who
self-deploy come and get stranded, emergency response attention must then add them
to the long list of rescue, which will divert attention away from the existing priority rescue
work. It's simply too dangerous.”

. The best way you can help right now is to help supply the impacted shelters by donating
money so they can purchase urgently needed supplies for the animals they are housing.
The City of San Antonio Animal Care Services has a wish list which you can see at this
link and the SPCA of Texas is seeking donations. They are in urgent need of food,
crates and bedding.
