Related: About this forummy little one is starting to show her age
took mira for an emergency trip to the vet late last week and, while nothing is immediately dire, things aren't all great.
she's almost completely blind in one eye just due to her age but she's also totally blind in the other due to a detached retina as the result of hypertension, which they think could also be the reason that her kidney values are a bit elevated. she's also got a heart murmur and has lost a fair amount of weight in the last six months.
the vet gave me some hypertension meds (liquid, thank gods) and i'm heading out to pick up a stool softener for her because she's having problems with constipation (which the doc said could also be related to the hypertension). she's back to her normal sweet, cuddly self after an agonizing day thursday and a scare yesterday morning, but i have to start preparing myself a bit better for the inevitable because she's 15, as unbelievable to me as that is. i know we could have plenty of time left, it's just hard to have to start thinking about it.
here she is with her fat brother, who has absolutely zero respect for her space

(31,399 posts)Sounds like the vet figured things out pretty well, for now, if she's back to normal. Hopefully, she'll stabilize and feel
well for a long time.
I found out last summer when my 11 year old Snowy had to have surgery to remove bladder stones that she also
has a heart arrhythmia that could result in sudden death at any time. Makes me appreciate every day with her.
Give Mira an ear scritch for me, and even her fat brother a back pat!

(24,146 posts)this vet really seems to know what he's doing and has been absolutely fantastic in explaining and making sure i understand everything.
we go back for another blood pressure check and a urine draw end of next week, so i'm hoping for good news there. she is tachycardic but, again, that could well be the high blood pressure, so i'm just keeping a tight eye on her.

(16,385 posts)I had one that seemed OK until he turned about 15 and after some intervention lived until 19. You're doing all of the right things. Are those two litter mates? She is tiny compared to bro.

harvey isn't her actual brother, i just call him that. he was much more svelte when we brought him home from the shelter in 2015 but i overfed him when we first brought him home, so it's pretty much my fault he's such a lard (he weights about 3.5 times what she does right now). she's always been teeny tiny, tho.
hope you are well

"We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own, live within a fragile circle, easily and often breached.
Unable to accept its awful gaps, we still would live no other way.
We cherish memory as the only certain immortality,
never fully understanding the necessary plan."

(5,210 posts)She wasn't sick a day in her life, aside from a couple of abscesses due to cat fights when she was outside. I woke up one morning to her having seizures. It was horrible, and I got her to the vet as quickly as I could. I got there before the vet.
I hope you and your beloved have a lot of good years left, with minimum health issues. They're both beautiful.
