Atlanta officers save dog from apartment fire

ATLANTA - Dramatic body camera footage shows Atlanta police rescuing a dog from a fire at an abandoned apartment.

The fire happened Jan. 7 at Mayson Turner Road and Joseph E. Boone Boulevard.

The dog, who's been given the name "Smokey," has been placed for adoption at Fulton County Animal Services.

Channel 2's Audrey Washington spoke to Officer Robert Winkler and Officer Austin Denninger, who are both credited with saving Smokey.

In the body camera footage, you can see Winkler dragging the dog out of the building.

The dog was unresponsive, so Winkler and Denninger began chest compressions.

"We didn’t see a whole lot of improvement from the dog, but it finally started to come to,” Denninger said.

“When we had him on the ground, he started breathing again, but we gave him oxygen to kind of clear out his lungs,” Winkler said.

Hope someone very nice will become Smokey's forever friend. He deserves a human friend, for sure. nt Judi Lynn Jan 2018 #2
