We decided it was that time and I had to take her into the vet this morning and send her off. She would have been 23 years old next month. We're all a little sad that she's gone now, but she lasted way longer than most cats do. She wasn't afraid to bop the big dogs in the nose when they needed it even though she herself was tiny. She was never more than about 6 lbs her entire life. Here's one of the last photos we took of her about 3 weeks ago:

(21,148 posts)When my two previous cats died both times we heard noises that sounded like they were still roaming around the house. My friend said they were saying goodbye before going to cat heaven.

(2,860 posts)Tonight when I get home I'll miss her bunting me with her head for affection from the couch. I'll also miss her little yowl for some milk in the morning. She always knew when I was making tea and I would giver her just a little splash of milk in a sauce cup. She loved it, but too much would upset her tummy.

(20,248 posts)a last time [liver disease], he did pass on Mothers' Day in the middle of the nite. I woke up to an indisputable 'meow' at approx. 4 a.m. When the doc told us the timing when he had passed, I cried hard remembering his voice saying "when we meet again mommie"! 😪🕯

(2,860 posts)It's hard to believe that it's been that long. She was my wife's cat from before we got married, so she predates our marriage. Your story reminds me of when I took my old dog Cisco in to send him off at 14. He had two jobs during his life. During the day he guarded a delivery van. At night he guarded a van with spare PA equipment. Cisco was part of a rock n roll band. We would walk him on our breaks and he would come into the bars after closing. We didn't plan it this way, but on the day I put him down I walked out of the vets office. I got in the car and had NPR on. It was the 50th anniversary of 'the day the music died'. This was the day when Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper went down in an airplane. I couldn't believe it. I was balling all the way home. My Cisco is Buddy Holly's dog now. He's the one on the left in all my posts.

(6,235 posts)23 years is a long time. We had to send Burt to cat heaven this past Friday and we're devastated -- and we only had him for twelve years. I can't even imagine losing a pet after 23.

(2,860 posts)23 years is a very long time. Way longer than any of us would have expected this little cat to live. Yes, we're sad, but we have had plenty of time to prepare for this day. We also still have a house full of furry critters to comfort us. We'll be OK. Here's some hugs for you grumpyduck:

(9,895 posts)Also my thanks to you for providing a loving home and life to Sassy for 22+ years. We lost one of our long time furry family members a few years back and it was hard then and only a little easier now, but in time the loss is replaced with or squeezed aside by the memories and the love that was given and shared.
RIP Sassy, and may your happy memories soon overwhelm the loss as well.

(275 posts)When he does go I will be heartbroken. His jr partner Koko will be a mess for a while too I believe. But the point is that after my dog Buddy (a.k.a. Butthead) passed, for a few weeks I could hear the tags on his collar jingle in the morning. Once when we were just sitting and watching TV, my girlfriend turned to me and said "you better let Buddy in, be's out there barking". Then she realized....

(2,860 posts)He's been gone almost 10 years now. I used to do deliveries and he would ride in the front passenger seat of the van when I was on my rounds. Sometimes my brain thinks he's still over there. He would lean up against the door and put is front right paw on the 'paw rest' while we drove.

(2,116 posts)She was black with white markings, and we called her Boots. When she joined our family, the only dog in the neighborhood was my friend's Shetland Sheepdog they called Shep. Other dogs joined the neighborhood over the years, and they soon learned not to mess with Boots. She would be relaxing in the shade of our lilac shrubs when a new puppy, Kelly for example, would come investigating. As Kelly came closer, boots would hiss, spit and swipe out at his snout with claws extended. Kelly was a German Shepherd who grew to approximately 20x Boots' size, but a hiss and spit never failed to send him packing. Shep, on the other hand, could tree Boots without half trying.

(2,860 posts)Her name is Boots. She loves cats, but doesn't like other dogs. Sassy had to deal with these guys for most of her life.

(2,860 posts)Sassy couldn't make the jump over the 6 foot fence in our yard. I did catch my other cat Taz nose to nose with Boots in her yard when we first moved in. I almost panicked because I didn't know Boots yet. There was really nothing I could do except watch and hope for the best. As soon as Taz saw me, she jumped back over the fence as though she had been caught doing something wrong.

(15,257 posts)A range of shelter dogs and cats have come through and we have loved each one individually and jointly. Mixes of pits, Akitas, border collies, bulldogs.
Right now, Scooter looks the most like your Sassy. Although our Scooter has only three legs (one rear one was severely deformed, probably by accident) and is only around 2yo.

(2,860 posts)We only have two senior dogs left. One came from a shelter and the other from a rescue group. We inherited two cats from my deceased mother in law. One cat followed us home from the dog park. The three youngest ones came from a feral litter that we rescued on our street. We trapped the parents and got them fixed out our local Humane Society. They live on our street and us and our next door neighbors keep them well fed.

(34,386 posts)It sounds like she had a long life and was well-loved. None of us can hope for more than that. The only time our furry loved ones are capable of breaking our hearts is when it's time for them to leave us. Again, I'm so very sorry.

(17,441 posts)Razz was short for Raspberry because she couldn't meow loudly and it came out sounding like Bronx cheer. It has been more than twenty years, but I still think of her dancing a message instead of meowing.

(1,606 posts)Pets weave themselves into our lives and become symbiotic. I understand the emptiness you must be feeling, BUT assuredly you did the loving and humane thing.
I would hope that, as a society, we can attain a point where assisted death with dignity becomes a universal human right with a foundation in law.
You kitty reminds me of "Bob" who also attained a similar age. Bob was already a well-established, adult neighborhood cat when we moved here. SHE (as it was eventually discovered) was borderline friendly but just as often cantankerous. Simple arithmetic suggests she was at least 20 at the end. An "outdoor" cat, she was quite old and decrepit at that point. Frail, in pain, and suffering through a harsh Iowa winter, we decided to have her put down. The night before the scheduled euthanasia, our youngest daughter asked to bring her inside. We agreed--the ONLY time Bob was in the house (so I thought)--and they spent some time together until Bob lost bladder control and was gently taken back to her winter box in our garage. The next morning, day of the procedure, we went to lift Bob from her box. She'd already left us.
There was something poetic in that entire episode. I hope you can find some similar comfort in your loss.

(2,860 posts)Who was letting her in and how many times was she in your house? By the way. We also had a girl cat named Taz. We got her as a baby kitten from a local mom and pop pet store many years ago. They only took in 'oops litters' that people found. They thought she was a he. We didn't realize until we went to the vet to get her neutered.
