Related: About this forumFemale & Male, or Female & Female?
One of our dogs, our spayed female dachshund/papillon Chloe, seems to get along with the male dogs in our extended family better than the female. We have six dogs between all four couples (daughters & husbands & us): Four males, two females including Chloe. Right now, Chloe and Jack are our two dogs. I'm looking at other dogs on Petfinder, and have been limiting my search to male dogs.
Do any of you have experience with females living with other females, or is my gut telling me to get a male the best choice?
Thanks in advance!

(9,265 posts)They're siblings or were raised together. They don't like new cats introduced to the household, I've found (fixed) males much better in that regard. We had Samantha first and she hated the new cats we brought home over the years. When we introduced kitten Riley to our Freddie they were soon best friends and I'm sure they're cuddling together at the Bridge.

(4,033 posts)Ranging in age from 3 mos to 15 years and they all get along fine (except when the 3 month puppy decides to steal food from one of the others and which point she gets 'disciplined'). The puppy has even managed to get the 5 yo male, who was a couch potato, to romp and play.
We lost an 8 yo female to cancer a while back and she had been in the family since puppyhood as well and got along fine with the other female and the males.

(8,380 posts)I love Cavaliers. We've had two - both with MVD. First one died at 11 3/4 years of age. Second one died at age 7. Multiple health issues. My friend just euthanized hers - 7 years old, with Cushings, syringomyelia, and other issues. You are very fortunate, especially for the one that's 15!
Thanks for your advice!

(4,516 posts)that 2 females will always fight, even if they have been spayed or grown up together. I have found this to be true. My MIL has 2 females that have been together for 8 years. The 12 year old has stopped tolerating the younger one and now she has put them in separate rooms when she leaves.
Follow your gut.
