Charlie is an 11-year-old golden retriever who had to have both eyes removed due to glaucoma.
But that hasn't slowed him down one bit because Charlie is the rare canine who has his own "Seeing Eye dog."
He's got a good buddy named Maverick, a 4-month-old puppy who helps him get around now that the two have formed an adorable bond.
Owners Adam and Chelsea Stipe had Charlie's left eye removed in 2016 as a result of pain caused by glaucoma, and then his right eye a year later for the same condition.
The couple added Maverick to the family in January, and after some initial friction with Charlie, he soon became the older dog's helper.

(9,655 posts)I have friends who have an aging female golden who is in pretty much the same shape. I keep telling them to get a puppy for her. I'm sending them this video right now.

(28,086 posts)and then she got a puppy what was part Australian cattle dog.
The older dog had adjusted and usually got around just fine using his other senses but one day he got "lost" in the backyard. The puppy (who was probably about 6 months at the time) figured out something was wrong and "herded" the old dog back to the house. The problem was, from that day forward everytime the old dog moved the puppy was there "herding". Made the old dog cranky that he couldn't even walk to his food dish in peace.
In his spare time, the puppy would herd my youngest nephew (about 12 at the time) around the house, nipping at his heels as cattle dogs do. He was the only kid who got this treatment.

(25,908 posts)but the essential message, of the young dog helping the older blind one is great.
There's an instinct to help that exists in many creatures. It is wonderful to see it exemplified like this.

(51,479 posts)surgery on both eyes. She was diabetic. We had one eye removed and about a year later had to remove the remaining one. OSU said she set the record for the most major eye surgeries in 24 months.
It was hard that she lost her sight twice.
