Related: About this forumHave you been able to use the "Elizabethan Collar" or cone collar on your pet?
My dog has a sore on his elbow that needs to heal. He got a big injection of antibiotics from the vet yesterday. She told me to keep a collar on him for at least 7 days.
He's part malamute and very independent. He doesn't do something just because I want him to. The last time I tried the cone collar was years ago and he kept running into me with it until I gave up.
He has continued to lick the sore off and on since we went to the vet. I ordered a soft collar on Amazon which should be delivered tomorrow. I have a feeling he's not going to like this either, although it won't be as painful for me when he runs into me.
Anyone have success getting their dog to wear the collar?

(7,715 posts)Both of them got used to it very quickly. He will continue to run into you since his peripheral vision won't be that great, but I'm sure he will look awfully cute in it!
Seriously, though, it's essential to keep them from doing stuff like he's doing or when they have surgery, spayed, etc.
I'm not sure about the soft collar...our collars were plastic/3M kinda' stuff.
Hope all goes well!

(5,182 posts)My little rescue dog is shy and apprehensive anyway. She is terrified of the cats and normally just hangs by herself in the furthest corner. When she had to use a cone for health issues she became more reclusive. It did not help that my latest rescue cat is terrified of hats and when doggy walked in with the cone the cat really became defensive. This terrified the poor cone wearing shy dog even more.
We were all glad when the issues were resolved.

(15,805 posts)Put a T-shirt on him with long enough sleeves that he can't touch the area.
Fold a towel and wrap it around his neck, it should make a thick, wide collar that restricts his head movement from side to side. Secure the ends with a strip of tape. If he can get it off, tape the towel to his regular collar for added strength.
You can also make him a cape that is wide enough to cover the area. I've made them out of fabric scraps, old towels, whatever you have on hand. Secure it to his collar and let it drape across his back, closing the front so there's no opening.

(16,829 posts)The vet did mention a tshirt, but its so hot out (and he has a thick coat) I hate to put something else on him.

(15,805 posts)You basicly want the sleeve area to cover his sore. Just start cutting off the rest of the shirt that doesn't actually help to protect that area.

(16,386 posts)I think it's a good alternative to a cone and more humane. Just make sure he can't get it off. It will also take a little work.

(16,829 posts)I already have a hard cone but that's the one he kept ramming against me. I think he's going to try to remove anything I put on him but I'll try.

(16,829 posts)You have to inflate it first. He kind of stood around for a minute waiting for me to take it off, which is what he does when I put a halloween costume on him. Dress him up, take a few pictures, take it off. After a while he laid on my feet like he was reminding me that he is still dressed up.
I could apply the antibiotic and now he can't lick it off like he always does. Hopefully it will heal quickly.

(2,769 posts)My 9 month-old Berry swallowed a chunk of a toy that then got stuck in her intestine. So she had an operation to remove it. She absolutely refused the cone of shame and ripped it off every time. I went to the local RiteAid and bought a roll of bubble wrap. My daughter whipped up a snap-on cover from scrap fabric. It fit perfectly, and weighed nothing. Berry tolerated it very well and even used it as a pillow!
