Yoshi doing toy inventory...

Got some photos of my doggie doing his daily toy inventory. Once or twice a day he goes around the house and collects his toys, puts them in a big pile and hangs out with them all for awhile testing each one for toy worthiness (I guess that's what he's doing anyway). This is how he normally looks with his mouth open and the tongue flapping out (except it usually flaps out the side making him look extra-dorky). Somehow I think all the pictures of him I've shared so far all have his mouth shut, which is so weird because he rarely ever does have it shut.

Yes, my living room is a mess. You-know-who got into the trash in the few seconds of turning my back on it before putting it in the outside barrels (sneaky quick bugger!), and I'm in the middle of refinishing the dining room chairs so the place is a mess of stuff everywhere (which is why the chair in the photo has no cushion - it's still drying though Yoshi had to rub up against it while he's going through his spring shed, so I spent most of the day picking off little white hairs off that chair with tweezers and watching movies). And that big wet spot on the carpet is from his slobber... he'd been working on the toy inventory testing for quite awhile before I got out the camera and made a damp gooey mess where he'd been working on ripping off Wuffie's face and pulling the stuffing out... Wuffie will be back in emergency surgery tomorrow I guess. Pretend you don't notice the place is a wreck.

instead of gathering all the toys, they pull them out (we have a couple of ottomans with storage, they left the lids with their noses and drag each one out) and spread them around the house. It is as though by picking up the toys we have ruined their interior decorating.

I am impressed with how intact the stuffed toys are...ooh I do see a little stuffing!

You have a very cute and very handsome dog!

or replacing the disemboweled ones with new ones. I don't know what it is but it seems all dogs want to disembowel stuffed toys the second they get them... but they don't want you throwing out the remains either and will play with the torn "skin" and innards as if the thing was till intact. Most of the time WHILE I'm doing needle and thread surgery on one toy he's busy getting the next one ready for the next operation. Like today, while I was fixing Wuffie's face he was four feet away tearing up Mr. Lobster's tail again. Ms. Pheasant didn't last a day though... he completely tore her to tiny slobbery bits all over the yard the day I brought her home. I'm not sure if that meant he hated her or adored her so much he had to totally annihilate her.

My first Akita totally destroyed every stuffed toy I got him immediately like Ms. Pheasant, but he did have a stuffed gorilla that he adored beyond reason and carried everywhere his whole life even when there was nothing left of it but a small scrap of filthy bald material that I think used to be its butt. He insisted on taking Mr. Monkey on his walks even when he was so injured he had no more appendages left and dropped balls of stuffing along the way on the sidewalk. He wouldn't let me throw away that tiny scrap of material that was left of Mr. Monkey for years and would have a fit if I threw it in the trashcan... he'd tip out the trashcan and dig it out and go lay down of top of it to protect it from me giving me the indignant stink eye that I had the gall to try throwing away the last sacred remains of Mr. Monkey.

All three of them were anal retentive about their toys though so it doesn't surprise me that Yoshi does daily toy inventory. The first one would go around the house and gather up his toys and put them all in his crate at bed time. But his crate was too small for him though he always tried stuffing himself in it anyway and panicked if I closed it up and tried to get rid of it. So he would hang out in there with parts of him spilling out the door and through the bars. With all his toys in there he definitely didn't fit, so after putting all his toys in every night he'd try stuffing himself in there with them and end up kicking them all back out the door so he could get in to go to sleep.

The second one, Boo, also did the toy gathering at bed time except he piled his toys in the corner next to the crate, but he didn't sleep in the crate at night but upstairs at the landing at the top of the stairs because I sleep upstairs and he wanted to be near me. But if I got up at night and went downstairs for any reason he followed me and rushed to his toy pile and stand guard over them making sure I wasn't messing them up and watching what I was doing until I went back upstairs again.

Now Yoshi is doing similar tidy toy coveting but he does it at any time of the day and piles his toys on his binkie (his blanket is under the pile somewhere) where ever his binkie happens to be since he tends to drag it around. The other two had no interest at all in the blanket, but Yoshi uses it much as another toy by dragging it around, scraping it into a pile and rolling around on it. He takes his treats to the binkie to eat and uses it as a place to hide things, like if I give him a bone and he's done with it he rolls it up in the binkie to hide it while he's off doing something else. They also all like to steal small things around the house and hide them from me just as a lark like the keys, the sunglasses, the toothpaste tube, the hairbrush... any small item that I use all the time. But they all always used the same hiding place for everything and always seemed astounded that you so easily found what they hid. The first one hid things under the sofa, Boo hid things behind a certain chair in the living room, and Yoshi hides things in his binkie where ever it happens to be. I'm constantly shaking out the binkie in search of my keys or the hairbrush or some other thing that went missing and what ever I'm looking for plus some other things he's gathered and hid will always fall out. After all these years with Akitas stealing my stuff and hiding them in the same place I don't even think about what I'm doing in going in search of my stuff any more and don't find it weird at all, but it sure does sound weird to really think or talk about it... just every day stuff with an Akita I guess. They soooo different in so many ways, but it's almost scary how all of mine are so much the same with the odd anal retentive tidy things they do. They're ridiculously regimented and organized almost as if they have OCD or something and can somehow tell time when I can't even do that. Like, how in the world does Yoshi know it's exactly midnight and time for our nightime walk when I have no idea what time it is? At midnight every night he'll come get me and let me know it's time to go walking even if he was just in the dead sleep and I'm on the computer or doing something else and have no idea what time it is myself. And he doesn't wear a watch... I know, I've checked his legs to be certain. LOL!

So now I have to fix Mr. Lobster's tail for the fourth or fifth time... while Yoshi is working on disemboweling Floppy Dog. I may get a few days reprieve from the perpetual surgery of his toys because either Floppy Dog is made of really tough stuff or he doesn't taste very good. Somehow Yoshi never seems to get very far with destroying Floppy Dog though he's determined to keep working at it.

Our shelter dog Jack takes his toys out often. We surmise that he had nothing of his own at the shelter, so he's really proud that he has his own things now.

We like that explanation!

was an amazing dog and I'm sure Yoshi is, too. My dogs rip apart stuffed animals within two minutes of getting one so I don't buy them anymore because one of mine likes to eat the stuffing. They even chew up the ones with no stuffing at all.

My cats do the opposite. I collect all the toys and put them in a basket.

Next day.... every single toy is spread out all over the room.

I collect them up again...

...next day, all over the room again.

At least they like their toys.

Yoshi is *really* cute.

I do the inventory in my house. I go around the yard/house and pick up all the toys. They are placed back in the toy bin and every.single.time Dash has them all out again by the end of the day. Never-ending battle ...
