It's very, very easy to cross-contaminate and make people sick. Your dog or cat can be a carrier of Salmonella and not show any symptoms at all. Just petting the animal and touching your face or a child's face can introduce the bacteria. If anyone in your family is ill and you have any of these pet food products in your house, go to the doctor ASAP and get a stool sample culture. The bacteria in question is Salmonella Infantis. It's very rare.

Salmonella infections can have lifelong consequences, including arthritis, hypertension, heart disease, and diabetes. Patients often need years of follow-up and special care. Food poisoning isn't just an uncomfortable hour or two on the toilet. People have been hospitalized over this.
