All the Bulldog people I know say not to use the spray on pet beds etc because of severe respiratory and allergy problems. Natures Miracle make a really good de-skunker but it isn't cheap. My pick is Dawn grease cutting dish soap. I always keep a large bottle under the sink.

The trick is to rub your stinky pet down to the skin with the liquid soap BEFORE you use any water. Skunk spray is an oil. If you get the dog wet first the skunk oil actually clings to the skin and hair. If you put the grease cutter/liquid soap on first and then add water, lather and rinse the skunk oil sloughs off. It is pretty effective. They use Dawn to clean oil off water birds after oil spills. It is safe for animals.

I did rub the spot with detergent before we put her in the tub. Got it all soaped up real good..

After the dog kept smelling after 3 weeks, I finally checked the web and found people recommending Febreze there, but it was too late. When I went to the store and checked, only one of the Febreze products said it was safe to use on animals.

Trouble is, when stuff like this happens, it's always 2:30 in the morning and you act as quickly as you can. The dog was okay after that because of the very thorough rinsing....


I don't care for Dawn for dishes because it seems to leave a taste in my coffee pot. I like green Palmolive for dishes - no anti-bacterial...

I doused him in tomato juice and then shampooed. It worked!

Stinky sprayed Henry in the mouth. After a bath Henry had no smell at all until he opened his mouth. I brushed his teeth with baking soda and crest, swabbed his mouth out with peroxide and fed him Listerine Breath Strips instead of treats for several days.

Everything would be fine and then Henry would start to pant and the room filled up with skunk! Ugggh! That is why I put Christmas lights on my bushes all year long!

I see some people have them on around their shrubbery but never connected it with skunks....how 'bout possoms and raccoons?

It usually scares anything away but it's even better because if any lights are on before you let the dogs out you can turn the hose on the bushes and flush out whatever critter is hiding in there.

The first thing I did when I bought my house was to bury 2 feet of chicken wire below the bottom of my fence and put in lights with motion detectors in every corner of my back yard. Knock on wood it keeps working!

I tried the tomato juice deal (which was a HUGE pain since he was a HUGE dog) and all it did was turn the parts of him that were white a pretty pinkish color that lasted for weeks. He still stank like hell though. Thankfully the vet told me about the nutralizer stuff to bathe him in and I had to swab out his mouth with viniger for his skunk breath. God almighty though, that stink was so bad I had to tie a sweatshirt around my face just to bathe him and my eyes watered like crazy. Never, never, never do I ever want to deal with THAT again!

After that experience any time I walk the dog I'm subconciously on the lookout for them especially on trash days when most people put their trash out the night before... that's when all manner of critters come out to invade the garbage. Last year Quincy got into a row with a skunk, it wasn't too bad but I bathed him with a vinegar and baking soda paste and then rinsed him well. It didn't bother us after that too much.

I'd be weary of febreze, ofcourse that's just me.
