(17,276 posts)The black dogs and kitties take the longest to adopt. I'm doing my part: one of our two cats is black.

(3,041 posts)And the thing about my pants is, they're black.
So how am I supposed to see the cat?
Well, a flash does help a little...
Edit: Yes, those are puzzle pieces on the floor. I took them off the coffee table for obvious reasons.

(4,544 posts)through the years. My first pet as an adult was a gorgeous, jet black dog with crooked ears (one up, one down) that we got from the pound (I think he was a Border Collie/Lab mix), and he was one of the best dogs I've ever known. Another one was a black Irish Setter, a genetic anomaly. My Dad knew the breeder, who was going to kill the poor little puppy because it was "defective." My Dad talked him into giving it to him instead (Dad was such a great dog-lover), and Dad gave him to me. He was a cool, goofy guy.
I also had a wonderful black and white tuxedo cat who was one of my all-time favorite cats ever. She was such a love. My daughter currently has a gorgeous, fluffy black kitten who showed up in our driveway last fall on "Black Cat Appreciation Day." True story! I thought I saw a streak of something black in the headlight beams when I pulled up, but didn't know what it was. I got out of my car (it was dark), and this little, black ball of fur ran up to me and said "HI!" (I swear she did.) We tried to find an owner, but no one claimed her, so she's with my daughter now.

(30,811 posts)I can see pure black cats having a stigma, with the superstition about them. But why black dogs? Black labs are very popular, for example. Why would other black dogs be neglected at shelters? Does a darker shade have a psychological impact on us, that makes them seem meaner, scarier, more mysterious?

(39,191 posts)he was this itty bitty kitteh. How he weighs 22 lbs and can look over the counter when he stands up. No gentler a cat I have ever owed me (us).

(2,100 posts)Was the best cat I've ever had. I adopted her from the pound and she lived a nice long happy life. My new kitty is great and I love him and I know we're not supposed to pick favorites, but, you know, between you and me she was the best.

(28,473 posts)Inherited from my bf's ex who left them behind when she moved 2000 miles away. Glad we have them, not glad people like her exist who desert their pets!
Interestingly, when I went to adopt my beloved brown dog, Bear, the shelter told me he had brown dog syndrome, that people weren't interested in brown dogs and they were the most overlooked animals in shelters. I would have taken Bear any way - he was so clearly MY dog - but I think it's interesting that I first heard of whole swaths of animals being rejected based on fur color. That's just nuts.

(18,219 posts)It would have never occurred to me that a black cat or dog would be passed over. I do not have a black cat now, but I have, and the color of fur has never been something I looked at. I can't figure it out, but I am sure there is some psychological reason for some people.
Bless the black animals.
