http://www.salon.com/2013/02/16/maybe_dogs_really_can_talk/I know two Australian dogs, Chocolate and Cina, who love to play fetch. Each throw sends them racing for that magic orb of rubber. When Chocolate retrieves the ball, inevitably Cina wrestles the ball from Chocolates mouth, even while Chocolate growls loudly. The girls also eat together, but when Cina tries the same trick with Chocolates food, the result is very different. A quiet growl warns Cina away.
It is difficult to see how Cina knows when it is OK to take something from Chocolates mouth, since both growls are made when Chocolate is aggravated and unwilling to share. If anything, Chocolates growl seems louder and scarier when she is playing.

(5,946 posts)I feel that made her smarter at learning new languages than me.
She would not talk on command, just when she felt like it.
My own mother thought it was just owner love projection until she walked into my house one day when I was not there and heard Hello spoken as I would say it. The dog also learned the words - out and home. Out because when she wanted out, she wanted out and Home for when we went fora walk and I stopped to talk to someone or dallied and she wanted home and, usually, dinner.
I saw in the comments that there is a show called this or that to determine if cats or dogs are smarter, I think it depends on the individual dog just like it depends on-the person and apparently dogs will be smarter than so,e republicans I know.

(11,065 posts)I wish I knew what he was saying. My two other Akitas used to chat, too, but the current poochie talks in a different language... the sounds he makes are different. Makes me feel like I need to learn a new doggie language though I never knew what the other ones were chattering about in their particular doggie chattering language anyway.
I always wondered why my first Akita would often say "woo" or "woo woo woo", but he never once said "woo woo". And it sounded just like he was actually saying the word "woo" whenever he did it.
Oh, the strange things our dogs do that we actually spend time puzzling over... as if it really matters that Kato never said "woo woo" instead of "woo" or "woo woo woo", yet I STILL wonder about that!

(52,162 posts)If he got yelled at for anything he would mutter under his breath after I was done yelling at him. Or he would bark, I would tell him to stop, and then he would mutter under his breath. If I said something about the muttering he would mutter again only stopping when he had last word.

(9,494 posts)until he gets a taste of food. The says "WOW" and leaves. It's pretty cute. I tried to film him but he just stares at the camera until I turn it off.
