Mother lauded for placing India's first gay matrimonial ad for son

An advertisement placed by a mother seeking a groom for her gay son has gained widespread attention in India. The classified ad is the first of its kind in a country where homosexuality is illegal.

NEW DELHI: Like any other mother, 57-year-old Padma Iyer is keen to get her son married. But, Mrs Iyer’s task of looking for an arranged match is rather difficult, as she is seeking a groom for her 36-year-old Harish - who is gay.

Many parents use matrimonial advertisements to find potential spouses for their children. After some hesitation, Mrs Iyer decided to also post an advertisement in a Mumbai tabloid.

“I was thinking, as long as I am there, I'll look after him - but what happens to him after me,” said Mrs Iyer. “So I said, ‘you should find a partner, it is high time.’ But he said he was not able to get anybody. “
