(2,631 posts)The OP is trying to promote a stereotype that is flat out ridiculous. But that's how you do it. You create ridiculous generalizations, engage in downright hateful speech, and make your opponent into something less than human. That's what I'm seeing out of a lot of the anti-gun crowd these days. And they wonder why gun owners don't trust them?

(6,960 posts)The list of outrageous, crazy things in the media that pro-gunners have been saying in the past three weeks is creating an extreme image of the gun owner.
The anti-gun people don't have to do much when you have the 2nd Amendment absolutists comparing gun regulations to the yellow star Jews had to wear in Nazi Germany; to Hitler and Stalin; to time to start thinking about "killing some people"; to a second American revolution; to conjecturing that MLK Jr. would for all African-Americans carrying guns; etc.
Those of you out there who are sensible gun rights advocates need to be sounding rational and supporting something like universal background checks --- and not letting the NRA, Alex Jones, Louis Gohmert, Rush Limbaugh and the likes of Larry Platt be the public face of the pro-gun position.
I own two guns; I am not afraid of guns and I am not against people buying and owning guns -- but I support limiting the size of clips and I support universal background checks paid for by a tax on all guns sales.

(20,709 posts)Oh, and I doubt if anyone really wonders why these gun nuts don't "trust" them.

"Here's the James Yeager video. You lose."

(3,300 posts)Then don't be accusing the cartoon of demonizing gun owners. If you are unwilling to analyze the facts, which are:
The second amendment is not threatened. If you are guaranteed anything, it is the "right to bear arms" - not "the right to bear any and all arms". You are not permitted to own a nuclear bomb, and society in general is reflected by current law until society decides the laws need to be changed. That is what is happening right now.
What will happen is variants on the following:
Close the gun show and private sale loopholes - background checks for every gun sale and during the purchase of ammunition, because a gun without ammo is a bat.
Eliminate the sale of military style semi-automatic assault rifles and large capacity magazines
Those are the only things I've heard consistently and they seem pretty common-sense to me.

(2,631 posts)Allowing NICS checks for private sales is a great idea. Banning a firearm because it is not aesthetically pleasing or because some deranged criminal got his hands on one is just not anything I'm willing to discuss.
Let's talk about ways to deal with the phenomenon of middle class young men "suddenly" turning into monsters. As if nobody noticed their behavior up until the killing commenced. Let's talk about drug gangs enforcing business contracts through murder and intimidation. And let's most definitely continue to shed light on domestic violence. It's a poor workman who blames the tool.

"Do not post bigotry based on someone's race or ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion or lack thereof, disability, or other comparable personal characteristic" I think casting all southerners or all overweight people as lunatics fits the definition

(8 posts)minimal intelligence...the willingness to exercise censorship based on their own prejudices is the only qualification. This god damned place would be far better off with NO 'moderation' than the horseshit way it's run at present. It's a fucking mutual jackoff society with a small cadre of basement-dwelling Cheeto-munching sociopaths who instanteneously reject, threaten and insult any newcomer with even the tiniest scintilla of dissent to the Lingua Franca...complete and total fealty to the incumbent political correctness is de jure and anyone who dares to say anything to disrupt their little tatting party will shortly be served a "pizza"..(their juvenile appellation for being banned). How sad it all really is.
