http://www.usatoday.com/story/onpolitics/2013/01/29/guns-bloomberg-pac-halvorson-jesse-jackson/1875539/New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg vowed he would try and defeat gun-control opponents at the ballot box. So now he's making a play in Chicago, a city with a high murder rate, where voters will pick a replacement in Congress for Jesse Jackson Jr.
Bloomberg's Independence USA PAC is launching TV ads against Democrat Debbie Halvorson, a former congresswoman who once got an "A" rating from the NRA. She's in a crowded field of candidates vying in the April 6 special election.
"Throughout her years in Washington and Springfield, Debbie Halvorson's record on gun safety has been entirely devoid of any semblance of the kind of common-sense reforms that will keep Americans safer from the scourge of gun violence," said Stefan Friedman, a spokesman for the PAC.
The group said it has made a "significant" ad buy on TV and cable, but did not disclose how much it is spending on the ad campaign. The commercial ends with a narrator saying: "Debbie Halvorson: When it comes to preventing gun violence, she gets an 'F.' "

(17,502 posts)is a good thing as long as you agree with the cause? Sorry, it is always wrong be it Wall Street banks going after Ms. Warren or Bloomburg going after Democrats he doesn't like. Are the other people in the race fellow Democrats in a primary? If not, you might want to read the TOS closer.

(17,502 posts)that doesn't mean the Kochs support it. Personally, I try to avoid partisan sources as much as possible.

(6,185 posts)But gun grabbers like him are too full of themselves to notice that people actually resent some outsider meddling in their district and state.
They announce that they are going to ban something and then are stunned and stupid when people rush to buy what they demonize and try to ban.
Bloomberg will give the GOP all the fodder they need to actually have a chance to win this seat for the first time in 40 years.
Halvorson is a good, solid Dem on every issue. But she happens to be pro gun.
Purist assholes are going to lose the Senate and lose the seats we gained in the House in 2012.
I do love the fact that loudmouths that can't get any gun measures repealed in their own state are full of great advice for everyone else.
But on the good news side of things ... Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon has formed a bi-partisan committee from the house to develop the concealed carry laws for Illinois. The best estimates are we'll get shall issue by July.

(735 posts)Are Right-Wing Libertarian Internet Trolls Getting Paid to Dumb Down Online Conversations?
They are the online equivalent of enclosure riots: the rick-burning, fence-toppling protests by English peasants losing their rights to the land. When MasterCard, Visa, Paypal and Amazon tried to shut WikiLeaks out of the cyber-commons, an army of hackers responded by trying to smash their way into these great estates and pull down their fences.
In the Wikileaks punch-up the commoners appear to have the upper hand. But its just one battle. Theres a wider cyberwar being fought, of which you hear much less. And in most cases the landlords, with the help of a mercenary army, are winning.
Im not talking here about threats to net neutrality and the danger of a two-tier internet developing, though these are real. Im talking about the daily attempts to control and influence content in the interests of the state and corporations: attempts in which money talks.
The weapon used by both state and corporate players is a technique known as astroturfing. An astroturf campaign is one that mimics spontaneous grassroots mobilizations, but which has in reality been organized. Anyone writing a comment piece in Mandarin critical of the Chinese government, for example, is likely to be bombarded with abuse by people purporting to be ordinary citizens, upset by the slurs against their country.
But many of them arent upset: they are members of the 50 Cent Party, so-called because one Chinese government agency pays 5 mao (half a yuan) for every post its tame commenters write. Teams of these sock-puppets are hired by party leaders to drown out critical voices and derail intelligent debates.

(18,774 posts)Mayor B will support any candidate who runs against a pro-gun pol.
My district has not been a non-Dem since before Herbert Hoover; I don't think it has ever been Republican, even under Lincoln. I still would not want a billionaire a thousand miles away dabbling in primaries or general election to sway it the way he wants on a single issue. I would rather take my chances with my neighbors to vote who we think is best.
I have Diet Coke hear but might enjoy a hard lemonade later; thanks for the offer
