A friend of the homeowner, a man, shot another burglar with the homeowner's gun, police report. The burglars fled the scene and went to a house at the 500 block of SE 79, police said.
Both shooting victims were taken to a hospital and were in serious to critical condition, police said.
The other three have been captured, the two wounded have inproved and are expected to survive. All are being charged. No charges are being filed on the defenders. http://www.koco.com/news/oklahomanews/okc/2-home-invaders-shot-by-OKC-homeowner-to-face-charges/-/11777584/18283312/-/11dwr2jz/-/index.html
There are times when one wants to have a LOT of ammo at the ready. Confronting five burglars at once would definately be one of those times.

(2,927 posts)... burglars, rapists and home invaders are 72.3 times more likely to get shot if you have a gun in the house than if you don't.
Cary
(11,746 posts)They get shot in one out of every 7,230 events?
I would think it would be a lot more than 72.3 times. How do they get shot if no one has a gun?
This is a ridiculous statistic.

(17,493 posts)With just a little practice an individual can swap out a standard magazine in one or two seconds.
If you don't believe me just go to youtube and search for "fast pistol reloading."
safeinOhio
(32,698 posts)mags can be swapped out in 2 seconds. Wouldn't limiting round capacity make law abiding citizens safer with little to no affect on rounds needed?

(39,171 posts)ie the magazine the gun was designed to used.
10 is not more reliable then 13 - which is standard for some guns.
safeinOhio
(32,698 posts)which does not go over the 13 you said.
Duckhunter935
(16,974 posts)standard is 20, that is what it is designed for and came with it. My Ruger SR40 is designed for 15 and that is also what came with the weapon. I guess those are to many.
hack89
(39,171 posts)I have a Glock designed for 17 - it also happens to be the most popular law enforcement pistol worldwide. There are 100s of millions of 17 round magazines in circulation - there is nothing you can do about it.
This fixation on how many bullets is a dead end. It will not make America safer.
Better universal background checks and cracking down on the illegal arms trade have widespread support and will work.
safeinOhio
(32,698 posts)In just a second or two you can reload another mag.
hack89
(39,171 posts)It will take a lot of work to get any gun control legislation through congress. Why waste time on feel good legislation? There are laws that will actually make a difference - a magazine size limit will not.
spin
(17,493 posts)and he faced a criminal with the same type handgun or rifle that held a now illegal but once standard magazine with more than 10 rounds. Is that fair?
Exceptions will probably be granted to police officers. They will be able to have magazines for their weapons which hold more than 10 rounds. I have no problem with this as they may face armed criminals who also carry weapons with magazines that also hold more more than 10 rounds.
If I understand correctly a new state law in New York requires an honest citizen to only have 7 rounds in his magazine no matter how many rounds it was designed to hold. Does anyone honestly believe a bad guy will only load 7 rounds in the 17 round magazine for his Glock pistol when he heads out to commit a crime?
My point about high capacity magazines being unreliable is that clearing a jam is far more difficult than swapping a magazine and takes longer. This fact may have saved some lives in the Colorado theater shooting.
Source: Colorado shooter's rifle jammed during rampage
From Susan Candiotti, CNN
updated 7:07 PM EDT, Sun July 22, 2012
(CNN) -- The semi-automatic rifle used in the Colorado theater killings jammed during the rampage, apparently because of a problem with the 100-shot magazine feeding it, a law enforcement source with direct knowledge of the investigation said Sunday.
The military-style AR-15 had a separately purchased drum magazine, which can have trouble feeding bullets into the firing chamber if the gun is fired rapidly, the source told CNN.
"These after-market extended magazines have a tendency to jam," the source said.
One of the survivors of the early Friday assault, Josh Nowlan, said Saturday that he would not have been alive if the suspect's gun had not jammed....emphasis added
Investigators say the rifle was one of three guns used by Colorado massacre suspect James Holmes in the early Friday killings, along with a shotgun and a .40-caliber pistol. The handgun also had an extended magazine that held 40 rounds, the source said.

(32,698 posts)My self defense weapon is a single action, five shot 22 mag.. My choice because in 99 percent of self defense situations, that is all I require. It is enough for me escape uninjured.
spin
(17,493 posts)is a double barreled 12 gauge coach gun. Neither you or I feel the need to have a firearm with a high capacity magazine for self defense. That is and should be our choice.
Some other gun owners would disagree with our choice of personal defense weapons and call both of our handguns "mouse guns." Such people will point out that if we ever survive a life and death situation we will probably upgrade to a more powerful handgun with a higher capacity. They might well be right.
I believe both of us live in fairly urban areas but our nation contains large swaths of rural country where a personal defense weapon such as an AR-15 with a 20 round magazine or a Glcok pistol with a magazine that holds more than 10 rounds might be a good choice as an encounter may occur at a greater range than in a rural environment.
I feel that an honest, responsible and sane individual should have a choice of whatever firearm he feels necessary for his defense. Our efforts to improve our gun laws should be focus mostly on insuring that criminals and people with severe mental issues find it far more difficult to obtain a firearm than it true today.
I do understand that a person who was honest, responsible and totally sane may change and become very dangerous. If most cases he will wave numerous red flags before he reaches this point.
To me it would make sense to work on improving our legal and mental health care systems to better detect such people and intervene before their fuse runs out and a tragedy results.
Unfortunately as long as there are still firearms in our nation we will see gun violence. The reality is that in this nation we will always have firearms.
Laws could even be passed that would require all firearms to be turned in but criminals would not comply nor would many currently honest citizens. Such laws might lead to a spit in our nation right down the middle with the Red states in the middle and the Blue "gun free" states on the coasts.

(17,502 posts)you do know that if it is a more modern single action, like the Ruger New Models, that it has a transfer bar that allows you to safely load all six? Just thought I would mention it.
I would like to see more single actions based on the Remington design, like the Ruger Bearcat.

(32,698 posts)5 rounds. It is a NAA Mini 22 with both LR and 22 mag cylinders with a very safe system tha allows the hammer to rest between loads. I can see no situation that would require more or larger rounds.

When it's an innocent person defending themselves, you get the generic "gun". If the burglars had murdered the homeowners, especially if it was with a Scary Black Rifle, you'd have every lurid detail of the weapon with "Assault Weapon Slaughters Household" on a crawler at the bottom of the screen.

(32,698 posts)why would 5 people break into an occupied home, unless there were drugs or large amounts of cash there?
Same thing happened near here and it was latter reported that it was a grow house.
