The head of the NYPDs largest police union yesterday called for an absolute ban on assault weapons except for cops and members of the military.
"There is no legitimate reason for an assault weapon with their high capacity magazines to ever be in the hands of a private citizen, said Pat Lynch, head of the Patrolmens Benevolent Association. Weve said it before, when police officers were shot or where armor piercing bullets were used.

Real cops. Not sheriffs. Cops out on the streets.

Where I hunt there are feral dogs. I carry a handgun with a high capacity magazine because I don't want to be fumbling around with a magazine change if a pack of 5 of them were to decide I was worth the trouble.
That's at least 1 legitimate reason... which is higher than his claim of "no legitimate reason"...
It doesn't much matter to me what the police union says. When he goes home at night he has a gun, and a buttload of friends with guns.
I have myself and .....

(905 posts)Police refer to themselves as something other than private citizens. If they want to ban guns because they can only be used to kill large numbers of people then they have no reason to be exempted from such bans

(185 posts)No reason for civillian authorities to have them either, why do police need weapons that are only design for war and to kill as many people as people as possible in a short amount of time. What war are they fighting in the streets of America that they need the same power as the military in there hands? What war are civillians waging that they need a 30 round magazines?

(15,333 posts)I daresay if the Sheriff's Association had supported an AWB, there would be no dispute from him about their
status as police.

(12,072 posts)He must be really upset by the police and sheriff departments around the country that have announced that they will not enforce a new AWB. I imagine that to him they are real cops either.

I agree, so when will he decide the union members no longer need them? At least when not on duty or specifically once they retire?

The safety of our members is always a first concern for this union. For that reason, we support in principle any governmental effort to keep assault weapons out of the wrong hands. However, while the bill that was recently passed in Albany called the "New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act" contains measures to prevent assault weapons from falling into the wrong hands, increases penalties for those wrongfully utilizing them, and incorporates provisions to protect the privacy of our members, it did not include an appropriate exemption for active and retired law enforcement officers. As with many pieces of new legislation, there is a period shortly after enactment where omissions and unforeseen impacts become apparent that prompt a revision to the law.
It is our belief that the failure to consider and exempt law enforcement personnel from its reach was brought about by the urgency to take action against those who might wrongfully use assault weapons, in light of the widely publicized tragedies at Sandy Hook elementary. The PBA is actively working to enact changes to this law that will provide the appropriate exemptions from the law for active and retired law enforcement officers. We will keep you advised as we seek the necessary changes to exempt law enforcement from the provisions of the law.

Obviously he feels the bill will be effective in keeping his members safe, so why would an exemption for police, at least for now when off duty, or retired police officers be 'appropriate'?
I'll say it again. " no one is saying that anyone wants to take away your precious"
Oh wait;

Is anyone really surprised by that?
Perhaps you should seek out a different anti-gun hero. One who has a shred of credibility.
