Thank God Romney Isn't President Right Now

And I say this as an atheist... thank the heavenly Sky-Daddy!

Could you guys imagine this same aftermath of Sandy Hook right now? Not only would we likely be seeing the same gun control crap coming out of the White House, like a new AWB, but Mittens may have actually been able to peel off a considerable portion of the Republican vote in Congress to go along with him, just like Bush often did.

The nice thing about Obama being in the driver's seat is how predictable it is that the Republicans automatically knee-jerk against everything he does.

I mean, shit, he nominates a REPUBLICAN Defense Secretary, and the Republicans revolt along party-lines. Filibuster and everything. Go figure.

I have no doubt the Repukes are only going to increase their holdings in Congress in 2014, so it will be good to have a Democratic president to keep them in check.

Gridlock isn't necessarily a bad thing. Helps keep unconstitutional laws (like the PATRIOT Act and warrantless wiretaps) from seeping out of Washington.

1. I feel Romney would have been very willing to pass another Assault Weapons Ban ...

as he has never been a true friend of gun owners.. He would have got at least some support from Republicans so it probably would have had a far higher chance of passing.

I feel that we will see some true improvements to our gun laws as Obama will use the threat of another AWB as a bargaining chip.

I also feel the push for the AWB and the actions of some state legislatures will hurt the Democratic Party in the midterm elections at the local, state and national levels. For example New York State placed a 7 round limit on the amount of ammo that you can legally have in a magazine. I can understand a 10 round limit but a 7 round limit is foolish as few if any firearm manufacturers make such magazines and many may simply chose not to. Therefore many common and popular semi-auto firearms may no longer be available for legal sale in New York. Of course criminals will simple ignore this law.

NY SAFE Act

The New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act of 2013 commonly known as the NY SAFE Act is a gun control law of the state of New York. The law was passed by the New York State Legislature on January 15, 2013, and was signed into law by Governor of New York Andrew Cuomo on the same day.[1]

***snip***

The SAFE Act includes the following provisions:[6][7]
Bans possession of any high-capacity magazines regardless of when they were made or sold. The maximum capacity for a detachable magazine is reduced from ten rounds to seven. Magazines owned before passage of the SAFE Act able to hold seven to ten rounds can be possessed, but cannot be loaded with more than seven rounds. .22 caliber tubular magazines are exempt from this limit. Previously legal "pre-1994-ban" magazines with a capacity of 30 rounds are not exempt, and must be sold within one year to an out-of-state resident or turned into local authorities. The magazine limit takes effect April 15, 2013.[8]

Many blame the big bad NRA as the major obstacle to strong gun control and there is no doubt that this organization has considerable power. However I feel the gun owner vote is far more important. Remember that there are 80,000,000 gun owners in our nation and add to this the voting age members of their family and you have a POWERFUL voting block. Gun owners will show up at the polls in the midterm elections and quite possibly vote against even those Democrats who strongly support gun rights. Gun owners also have long memories and the current push for gun control may make a difference in the number of Democrats elected for many years.

2. Yeah, I really don't like the dynamics of how the new political map is playing out.

Even though Obama managed to get elected twice, thanks to the more populous states and the way the current Electoral College system is setup, the Republicans have made serious inroads at the state-level legislatures, and I fear many urban Democrats' bloodlust for gun control is a big factor in really polarizing the rural vote.

If some of these state legislatures begin tinkering with the E.C. system and change it from how it currently works based off statewide population to based off legislative districts (each district getting an equal vote), the Republicans could very well cement themselves into power (at least at the Federal level) for a very long time.

3. The NRA is the ranting, cane waving, crazy uncle

of a much bigger family.

My time here continues to teach me that anti-gun people think there are only two kinds of gun owners: the gun obsessed fetishist, and old-timey Fudd.

Because they understand gun owners like Bush understood the Middle East, they'll achieve their mission about the same.
