(Reuters) - Colorado's governor will sign three gun control bills into law on Wednesday, including one banning ammunition magazines with more than 15 rounds in a state that has experienced two of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history.
The measures that Democratic Governor John Hickenlooper will sign also include a bill requiring universal background checks for gun buyers, and another that requires gun buyers to pay for their own background checks, said the governor's spokesman, Eric Brown.
The bills passed both chambers of the Colorado state legislature last week as part of a package of gun control legislation that followed months of heated discussion and pushed Colorado to the forefront of a national gun control debate.
The state Senate has also approved legislation banning online certification for concealed-carry permits, but the measure was still pending in the state House. Another pending measure could bar gun purchases by domestic violence offenders, although Hickenlooper had previously said he was undecided about that measure until he sees the final wording.

(153 posts)I hope they follow through on this and aren't just rattling their sabres.
Apparently Gov Hickenlooper has announced that he will sign HB 1224 on Wednesday. We were asked for our reaction, and here is what we said:
We have said all along that based on the legal problems and uncertainties in the bill, as well as general principle, we will have no choice but to leave if the Governor signs this into law. We will start our transition out of the state almost immediately, and we will prioritize moving magazine manufacturing operations first. We expect the first PMAGs to be made outside CO within 30 days of the signing, with the rest to follow in phases. We will likely become a multi-state operation as a result of this move, and not all locations have been selected. We have made some initial contacts and evaluated a list of new potential locations for additional manufacturing and the new company headquarters, and we will begin talks with various state representatives in earnest if the Governor indeed signs this legislation. Although we are agile for a company of our size, it is still a significant footprint, and we will perform this move in a manner that is best for the company and our employees.
It is disappointing to us that money and a social agenda from outside the state have apparently penetrated the American West to control our legislature and Governor, but we feel confident that Colorado residents can still take the state back through recalls, ballot initiatives, and the 2014 election to undo these wrongs against responsible Citizens.

I fear the last paragraph is a harbinger of what is to come and the cost of authoritarians meddling in local politics...

(950 posts)Magpul isn't the only company that's pulling stakes.
Specialty Sports and Supply is canceling plans to open two new stores and the owner is moving the corporate offices out of state.
And the Colorado Association of County Sheriffs is planning a class action suit.
Much as I hate to see folks lose their jobs I support both business owners in their decisions

(950 posts)That's just vile, do you not realize that you are talking about real people with real children to feed and real bills to pay?
Fuck 'em though, they're just a bunch of republican rednecks right? (whether they are or not)

(6,057 posts)I'd suggest you talk to the owners of Specialty Sports. Nobody is MAKING them move and fire these people.
Be compassionate and let them no how badly you feel for their employees!

(5,417 posts)but I don't blame them for leaving a state that doesn't want their business. Money talks, and sometimes its best to vote with your wallet, and if you disagree, then I see nothing wrong with moving to a new state.

(950 posts)that you have zero empathy for people who you perceive as having a different ideology than you. You don't give a fuck if they lose their jobs, as long as they're gun owners fuck 'em.
You disgust me
These are real people who pay real taxes and real bills and are fixing to lose real jobs with real benefits which will have a real impact on their lives and cause real pain.
But fuck 'em they're just republicans
People like you are the exact reason republicans call progressives hypocrites

(10,164 posts)If there's anything the avalanche of gun-related "discussion" (and I use the term lightly...) here has demonstrated, it's that in the eyes of far too many posters, it's a really fucking small tent after all. The neo-totalitarians can pretend all they want, but they're not liberals and they're not progressive.

Good on the Democratic governor and Democratic state legislature that got Colorado started on the road to some semblance of sanity when it comes to guns.

Look like someone posting on Democratic Underground doesn't care too much for progressives and liberals. Or Democrats: " A Democratic governor pandering to idiots"
One wonders ever why?
To ask the question is to answer it.

(10,164 posts)You're spectacularly underqualified...
I said precisely what I meant: the portion of the electorate (some of which are, embarrassingly, fellow progressives) naive and uninformed enough to actually believe these measures* will have any meaningful effect on gun violence. "Idiots" just takes a lot less long to type.
*Specifically weapon type bans and magazine capacity limits...as opposed to measures that might actually accomplish something, like universal checks, prison terms for traffickers/straw purchasers, etc...

(12,751 posts)governor are pandering to "idiots," i.e., their constituents, the vast majority of whom are liberals and progressives and even more moderate and conservative Democrats. You are stating that you think Colorado Democrats in general and progressives and liberals in particular are "idiots" - I'm quoting you EXACTLY - and are only now starting to see how that looks on a discussion board called Democratic Underground, and are now trying to walk it back and explain your very clear statement away.
You do know that on DU3 you can always self-delete a post, don't yah?

(12,751 posts)assume that your thinking has something to do with what you type and then post on a public message board. If the two are not connected, well, that's not my problem, but yours.
That aside, here's what you POSTED:
"A Democratic governor pandering to idiots by signing useless, feel-good legislation...
There: fixed it for you."
Every subsequent reply by me has been a spot-on analysis of that rather curious statement for a supposed Democrat on a Democratic discussion board to post: there hasn't been a speck of "telling you what to think."
