Mom mistakes daughter for boyfriend. Shoots and kills her.

" A mother was arrested Tuesday on charges of killing her 25-year-old daughter at a Florida home, authorities said."

http://www.ajc.com/news/news/police-mom-shot-killed-daughter-after-mistaking-he/nb5Ln/

Another story about a person with a gun:

"A northwest Georgia man thought he was shooting a prowler. Instead, it was a 72-year-old man with advanced Alzheimer’s disease who had wandered about three miles away from his home."

http://www.ajc.com/news/news/report-wandering-man-with-alzheimers-shot-killed/nb6tN/

In both cases, having possession of a gun wrecked their lives. The man in the second story may not be charged but he'll live everyday with the knowledge he killed an innocent elderly man.

16. "Target" ... hmmm. Sounds kind of creepy, actually.

Human beings as targets.

How many human being targets have you shot?

How many have you ever had in your sights?

While "target" is generic and accurate regardless of what it is, this context is an unfortunate dynamic. When it comes to home invasions and other violent assaults, the "target" certainly does not see you as a human being, but being a mere "mark".

Being irresponsible with one perhaps. Since the media does a poor job, I'll wait for the hearing or trial.

I and the vast majority of gun owners do not suffer these kinds of tragedies.

4. Should the person who shot what he thought was a prowler be charged with a crime.

His actions did cause the death of an innocent man and you seem to be saying those actions were irresponsible. Unintended manslaughter charges maybe?

sure of the target, but that is no substitute for due process. We have all kinds if politically loaded speculation on DU. Even NPR this a.m. has repeated the doctrine where a certain woman in Florida "fired in the air" and got 20 yrs or whatever.

If someone dies as a direct result of another person's irresponsible actions, is that not manslaughter?

Link if you have it, please.

I've forgotten, but think it was a shady bust with poor people and ethnicities involved.

"The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has officially ruled Westbrook's death as a homicide, but so far no charges have been filed against Hendrix."

The local district attorney is reviewing the case to see if Georgia's Stand your Ground law applies.

I don't know of any doubt about that. Now comes the second question. I'll let the DA and possibly the jury handle that one. Jackson has been looking for someone to have standing in his lawsuit. Even if some federal court strikes it down, which I doubt, it will simply fall back on Georgia common law, which was SYG anyway, which reads much like Illinois'.

13. 76 year old woman dies in shootout.
Tue Dec 3, 2013, 01:42 PM
Dec 2013

This woman had been robbed before and decided to get a gun for protection. Second time she's robbed, she uses the gun but is herself killed in the ensuing gun fight. Had she not gotten a gun, my guess is that she'd be poorer today but still alive.

Tue May 6, 2014, 10:12 PM
May 2014

Wondering what happened in the above two instance, I went google searching. I did not find anything in regards to the first story but in the 2nd, there will be no charges filed against the man who shot the 72 year old.

"A man who shot and killed an elderly Alzheimer’s patient in rural Georgia after mistaking him for a prowler will not face criminal charges, a local prosecutor said."
