I would like to see the numbers that include officers that are killed with weapons other than firearms and all weapons combined. Either way

(11,181 posts)Interesting that in the UK (excluding Northern Ireland) only about 75 cops were shot dead since 1900.
Another 24 were stabbed to death during those 113 years. Such a violent country.

(12,041 posts)We had 111 killed in the US just this year alone and the UK had 75 over the course of 113 years, meaning well under one death per year. I would say that is pretty damn impressive for a country of 63 million, our rate of 111 however? Most countries would not be celebrating that number as if it were low. It may seem low by US standards, but I think most people would much rather be closer to the UKs rate.

(17,502 posts)33 were killed with guns. 20 percent of those with their own guns. I don't know if the UK data includes auto accidents. I'm guessing not.
Wyoming has the highest firearms rate per capita in the US, but the number of Wyoming Highway Patrol officers killed in the line of duty since 1937 have been three, all with cars. In my hometown two officers died on duty, one in the 1950s and in 1978 or 1979. The later was shot by the city's public safety director inside of a cop car. The only game conservation officer killed was in 1913. Pretty good record given that they patrol large wilderness areas alone, and almost everyone the stop has a gun. Of course your state may vary.

(12,041 posts)Even when you figure in the per capita difference the UK rate is very impressive when compared to ours.

(17,502 posts)compare two different societies with different problems. The causes, nature, and solutions will be entirely different. While gun control laws existed in some US states (the first federal level was 1927) before 1920 (mostly in the South) UK had no gun control laws (they have a unitary system, as opposed to our federal system) until 1920. Before then, very few UK criminals used guns. Why? It could be because to use a gun would be something a "square" would do and not something king bad ass would have, or criminals couldn't afford them.
