I can't imagine what kind of people would leave home with a gun unsecured so this young girl could get ahold of it:

The teen was home alone on Monday morning when she opened fire on the burglar, she told ABC15.

That's when her dad stressed to keep the home security alarm on. He also showed her how to fire their .22 caliber handgun if she should ever need it.
Julio Lowe says he doesn't know why their home was targeted but is proud of his courageous young daughter and thankful she and her unborn baby boy are OK.
Didn't she know she had a far greater chance of being injured by her own gun, or that the burglar could easily disarm her and use it against her, or that if she had simply given him what he wanted, she would have been safe? Her parents should be arrested and charged for their negligence in leaving a deadly weapon where a mere child could gain possession of it.

The 6-year-old girl accidently shot by her 2-year-old brother at a home in Northeast Fresno on Sunday morning has been identified as Emily Lavender, investigators said on Monday.
Lavender was playing inside a bedroom in the home, located near Cedar & Teague Avenues, with two other children when her 2-year-old brother came into the room with a semi-automatic handgun, police said. Investigators say the gun accidently went off. Lavender was shot in the upper torso and later died, police said.
Investigators say haven't determined yet how the boy gained access to the gun. The children's father was in another room when the gun went off, police said. He was questioned by police on Sunday. So far, no charges have been filed in the case.

(15,396 posts)Once they're old enough to stay at home alone I'll leave an AR out, maybe a shotgun.

(15,396 posts)Even if you don't have kids to worry about...you're leaving your firearms out endangering innocent kids who may gain unwanted entry to your home.
We recommend you take your firearms to the local police station and turn them in before some poor child enters your home while you're away and causes harm to itself. It's for the greater good of society...

(5,412 posts)I have kids. A 3-year-old and a 6-year-old. You can bet I keep my guns locked up. I would rather have them out in the open, but I'm not going to risk my kids playing with them or their friends playing with them.
If I lived someplace where crime was a serious problem I might make other arrangements. But for now, my guns will stay locked up.

(754 posts)Parents are best at determining when their kids are ready to be taught about the safe handling and shooting of guns.
I got my shotgun when I was 13; a revolver at 14. At that time, we were charged with taking care of the weapons. Hunting weapons were in the gun cabinet, my handgun was in my closet. There were 4 handguns in 4 different places in our house. I this manner, a break-in could be thwarted by 4 different people from 4 different sites.

(1,831 posts)This physically weaker 17 year old defended her home and baby against an intruder. An intruder who had appeared multiple times attempting to gain entry for unknown (unstated) purposes. If it was my daughter, I'd be glad she could defend herself.
This sounds like a damn good ad for having a gun and trained people available.
Or am I misunderstanding your "sarcasm" emoticon?

(1,534 posts)The brady bunch uses anyone under 21 to pad their "kids killed by guns" statistic, so I thought it would work just as well to call this young woman a child, as well.
