According to the California Department of Justice, currently more than 21,000 Californians are in possession of more than 40,000 guns illegally.
Marin County District Attorney Ed Berberian decided to put his team to work to try to reduce the backlog.
"We want to make sure we get these weapons out of the hands of people that aren't supposed to have them," Berberian said.

(7,321 posts)I was a little surprised to read Marin county, although I always forget to consider that Novato is also a Marin County community, mostly Right Wing "Libertarian" tea baggers and such. What is strange about this news report (to me) is that it would appear the illegal weapons owners were merely "contacted" and presumably weapons and ammunitions were seized, but not arrested? I'm not clear on what was actually done with the "mentally ill" Novato man, and where was the location of the other 29 individuals? hmm. Maybe I missed that?

(17,502 posts)many are people with outstanding traffic tickets, a month behind on property taxes etc. Given California's high error rate, the guns are often returned. The definition of mentally ill could mean anything including minor depression or someone who sought counselling but not having violent thoughts or tendencies to having a philosophy someone doesn't like, see USSR. That is why I was appalled when Wayne La Pierre wanted a "mental health registry" and completely disgusted when gun control advocates jumped on the band wagon. Not only does it discourage people from getting treatment, it stigmatizes one of the least violent demographic including most schizophrenics

(7,321 posts)anyway, I thought the article was seriously lacking in information. Were these people arrested? If not then, why would it be legal for the police officials to confiscate ? I'm just left extremely confused. seems like the article is actually aPR piece to placate the "citizenry". and just plain bad journalism.

(17,493 posts)Enforcement of existing law is far more important than passing numerous laws and not enforcing them.
The county team went to homes of those prohibited by law of owning firearms because they've been convicted of a crime, are the subject of a restraining order or mentally unstable.

On the other hand I totally oppose any plan to register firearms and then decide to confiscate them from honest and sane people who have no criminal record or those gun owners who refuse to register their weapons.

(17,502 posts)is there any due process like federal law allows, or is it a case of neighbors "denouncing" you.

(17,493 posts)before you no longer can legally buy or own a firearm.
This sets a far higher standard than allowing your neighbors who dislike guns to simply contact the police to confiscate our firearms.

(17,502 posts)I'm skeptical of California's case. A MSGT I worked for at Travis mentioned that he had more problems with CA cops for driving while black than he did in even Alabama. LAPD and LA County Sheriff's office both have reputations for corruption and brutality. This is the county that actually had a $1K fine for playing frisbee on the beach. While the state has a reputation for being liberal and tolerant, it is really kind of authoritarian and far from anything I would define as liberal.

(17,493 posts)It would seem logical that liberals would be far less authoritarian than conservatives but it seems that this is not always the case.

(17,502 posts)Some are both, some are not. Governor Brown is both as far as I can tell. Diane Fienstien, not so much since she isn't much of a fan of the 1A and 4A either. Some just put a D next to their name to get elected. Carol McCarthy for example. She lost a Republican primary and ran as a Democrat and served two of her terms while registered as a Republican. Although she gradually became more progressive, for much of her time in congress she voted with the Republicans on everything but guns. Given her personal tragedy, it is understandable.
