Facebook closed its gun-sale loopholes. What about the rest of the social web?

Six months ago, a 15-year-old boy in Kentucky logged into Facebook and arranged to buy a gun. He found a seller – one of many – willing to complete the sale without a background check. The seller was even willing to cross state lines from Ohio to make the sale work. Just a week later, the gun found its way to a high-school football game. In the hands of a student.

I’m a parent, so of course that scares me. And not just as the mother who runs Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, who wonders how to help stop the next Sandy Hook tragedy. I’m a parent who, like most others, knows that even plugged-in teenagers can tire of Facebook for the next best thing online.

So of course I was gratified that Facebook and its photo-sharing subsidiary Instagram responded to our campaign and agreed last week to prevent potentially deadly gun sales with no background checks on their platforms. Because there’s a big problem when children can buy guns on the same sites where they “like” photos and chat with friends.

But Facebook and Instagram aren’t the only places on the internet where minors and criminals turn to find guns for sale without background checks. In fact, research by our parent organization at Mayors Against Illegal Guns has shown that plenty of online gun buyers – 1 out of 30 on Armslist.com – possess criminal records that federally prohibit them from owning firearms.

violating the Gun Control Act? Two counts, interstate sale without using an FFL and selling to a minor. If not, why not?

I doubt the validity of MAIG's estimate.

The fact that the atricle was written by shannon watts we could have saved ourselves the time of reading any of it and simply moved on. I doubt she's uttered an honest word her entire life.

Facebook did a whole bunch a nuthin. They said they'd remind people what the law is regarding interstate sales, remove blatent violations of that law and keep an eye out. All that was pretty much their policy to begin with. Calling that a "victory" is like me claiming responsibily for preventing asteroids from falling on my neighborhood.

The fact that this is all they have to crow about say a whole lot more about the "success" of her PR group than anything else.

1. She claims that the back ground checks bill was blocked from getting a full vote, when in fact, that's not the case, the full Senate did vote on it and it didn't reach the 60 vote threshold to prevent a filibuster.

2. She claims that because of her group, Starbucks has changed it's open carry policy within their stores, when in fact, Starbucks asks it's customers not to open carry, but they won't ask anyone to leave or refuse to serve them.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/19/business/starbucks-seeks-to-keep-guns-out-of-its-cofee-shops.html?_r=0

Otherwise, I agree with her, back ground checks on all firearms is a good goal to work for.

My p229 for a p220

Great trade with a good guy, neither of us were hurt in the deal. Made the trade on our way to Bristol and he had my old pistol posted before we could get out of the race 3 hours later.

I ended up getting rid of the 229 the same way I picked it up 3 or 4 years ago.

Of course now that I'm 40less I have to start looking for a replacement, I have over a thousand rounds of 40 with no distribution device. Hopefully Facebook will come through again.

I wonder what income she derives from this relationship?
