Retired nurse gets mob in Detroit to back off, stop beating driver
April 8, 2014 at 6:34 am
George Hunter The Detroit News
Detroit Deborah Hughes stood up to a ferocious mob and possibly saved a mans life.
The retired nurse said Monday she didnt hesitate when she saw a group of men savagely beating Steven Utash last week, after he got out of his pickup on the citys east side to check on a 10-year-old boy he had hit with his vehicle.
Nothing was really going through my head, other than They need to stop beating this man, said Hughes, 56.
I looked out the window and saw that the boy had been hit, so I threw on my coat and ran out there, said Hughes, who is retired from the St. James Nursing Center in Detroit.
Hughes also made sure to pack her .38 caliber pistol. You have to carry a gun around here, she said. This neighborhood is terrible. I dont walk around without my gun.

The way I read this, the crowd moved away because she was offering medical assiatance.
I said Please dont hit him anymore, and they backed up. Everybody cleared the way and gave me room to work on him. Nobody cussed me; they didnt attack me. They just let me do what I needed to do.
I massaged (Utashs) neck, and got his circulation going. He woke up and started swinging and kicking. By this time, the EMS came, and me and the EMS driver tied him down and put him in the ambulance.

(7,720 posts)7. I believe you have posted news stories about
people with CCW permits doing bad things. This is a story about a person with a CCW permit doing a good thing. What was your point again?

(17,493 posts)8. I find the posts you start in the Gungeon interesting although I often disagree ...
with your message.
Both sides of the gun control issue can make good points to favor their arguments.
The Gungeon is a DU group which allows both sides of the issue to politely debate. It's not a protected group like Gun Control Reform Activism.
Statement of Purpose: Gun Control Reform Activism
The Gun Control Reform Activism group is intended to:
Discuss how to enact progressive gun control reform in a supportive environment. The group serves as a safe haven in which to mobilize supporters in support of measures reducing gun violence by changing laws, culture and practice at the municipal, state, and federal levels. While there is no single solution to the tragic epidemic of gun violence, members agree that more guns are not the solution to gun violence, and are expected to be supportive of the policies of progressive gun control reform organizations.

The Gun Control Reform Activism group is a great place for those who support strong gun control to formulate ideas. If they wish, they can then debate these ideas in the Gungeon.
Often gun control advocates start posts here that deal with examples of individuals who legally carry concealed who misuse their weapon or have an accidental discharge in public. That's fair. Unfortunately such examples are frequently used to stereotype of all those who legally carry rather than a aberration.
Therefore, in my opinion, I see little problem with posting an article about a responsible citizen who bravely intervenes and successfully stops another person from being beat to death. The fact that she was legally carrying a handgun shows that there are examples of people with a carry permit who can and do act responsibly in a dangerous situation without having to draw their weapon.
I could also point out that perhaps this brave lady took the risk to her life and health because she knew that if she was also attacked, she had the ability to effectively defend herself.
