Of Rights and Responsibilities.

A former Utah Supreme Court justice, and a man I admire greatly, recently said "We need to focus less on our rights and more on our responsibilities." In that light, I'd like to start a conversation about the responsibilities of keeping and bearing arms.

This topic is broad, and I'd like to encourage a broad discussion, or at least allow those here to comment however they choose to interpret it. Whether that be regarding responsibilities to safely store weapons, consequences and liabilities following a self-defense shooting, consequences of misuse, or even whether Americans have a responsibility to be armed for defense of self or state.

To kick things off, I'll just mention something my brother (a firearms instructor, and another man I admire greatly) says a lot. "When you carry a gun, every situation you are ever in involves a gun. As such, your behavior must be beyond reproach." I think this is a sentiment with which the vast majority those who carry weapons would agree.

...a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation. from the USMC Rules for Gun Fighting #26

Being responsible for protecting your own life and the lives of others is not a short discussion or a even a collection of wisdom. It's a topic that will and should dominate a free society. The quest for the knowledge and quick situational thinking is a sign of freedom and respect.

I am actually loathe to carry outside of to and from the range or the gunsmith for work. It is exhausting literally to have to view everything through an avoidance prism. I am still on my guard when in certain areas, but also tend to look at it as if i need to be carrying there, maybe i should not be there.

I am also a very big proponent of realistic and in depth training for carriers specifically, but all owners in general. there is a world of difference in calm and leisurely paper punching, and a fear induced adrenaline response with a weapon. I would love for a non partisan, completely apolitical training system to be put in place, where people so inclined can learn about weapons, safety and proper utilization, without NRA political badgering.

A reasonable and non punitive insurance requirement, that would also reward training and storage milestones would be an idea I would look at but i see it as a way to "poll Tax" gun owners in the wrong hands.

A national FOID type system, that is rechecked automatically quarterly for violations. No registration, sorry i just don't trust incrementalists.

reforming the SBR, and Supressor tax system, cash and carry with on sight Tax payment. there is no deeper check done by the BATFE than the background run by my FFL, 9-12 month backlog is ridiculous, in fact due to NFA regulations it is a soft push for safer storage if more people have NFA weapons.

... and have a couple of SBRs and suppressors. Could you tell me more about the secure storage requirements for NFA items?

Thanks.

or trustee in the case of a weapon registered in trust.

there's quite a bit of leeway, i have even heard just locked up is secured, but I and every other NFA ownwer i know has gone with hi levels on safes due to the nature, expense and rarity of NFA items. i have a seperate safe that is only for my SBRs, and Supressors.
