Bloomberg Plans a $50 Million Challenge to the N.R.A.

Michael R. Bloomberg, making his first major political investment since leaving office, plans to spend $50 million this year building a nationwide grass-roots network to motivate voters who feel strongly about curbing gun violence, an organization he hopes can eventually outmuscle the National Rifle Association.

Mr. Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York, said gun control advocates need to learn from the N.R.A. and punish those politicians who fail to support their agenda — even Democrats whose positions otherwise align with his own.

“They say, ‘We don’t care. We’re going to go after you,’ ” he said of the N.R.A. “ ‘If you don’t vote with us we’re going to go after your kids and your grandkids and your great-grandkids. And we’re never going to stop.’ ”

He added: “We’ve got to make them afraid of us.”

It seems that many Democrats in Congress hoped to avoid the gun control issue prior to the midterms. It is quite likely that the efforts of Bloomberg's new national grass-roots organization will force many Democrats to take a position on gun control that could damage their chance of reelection.

I found several interesting excerpts from the article in the OP located at http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/16/us/bloomberg-plans-a-50-million-challenge-to-the-nra.html?hp&_r=0

Previous efforts by Mr. Bloomberg to push gun control have touched off tensions with national Democratic leaders, because he has run negative ads against incumbent Democrats whom he views as insufficiently supportive of gun control. The Democratic leaders argue that Mr. Bloomberg threatens to hand control of the Senate to Republicans, which they say would doom any hope of passing gun control legislation.

However he seems to advocate less draconian measures on gun control than have been proposed in the recent pass. Perhaps he will actually make some headway in changing our national gun laws.

The strategy will focus not on sweeping federal restrictions to ban certain weapons, but instead will seek to expand the background check system for gun buyers both at the state and national levels.

I have always suspected that the good mayor has an enormous ego.

Mr. Bloomberg was introspective as he spoke, and seemed both restless and wistful. When he sat down for the interview, it was a few days before his 50th college reunion. His mortality has started dawning on him, at 72. And he admitted he was a bit taken aback by how many of his former classmates had been appearing in the “in memoriam” pages of his school newsletter.

But if he senses that he may not have as much time left as he would like, he has little doubt about what would await him at a Judgment Day. Pointing to his work on gun safety, obesity and smoking cessation, he said with a grin: “I am telling you if there is a God, when I get to heaven I’m not stopping to be interviewed. I am heading straight in. I have earned my place in heaven. It’s not even close.”...emphasis added

it takes the top down efforts of a billionaire and a shit ton of his money to get people off their asses and do something? I think I see your problem.

***

“You can tell me all you want that the Republicans would be worse in the Senate than the Democrats,” he said. “Maybe they would. But that’s not what we’re talking about here.”

Clearly he cares nothing for Democrats, yet which party would be better, from his perspective as a billionaire?

The $50 million could be significant: In recent years, the N.R.A. has spent only $20 million annually on political activities. The political groups affiliated with the billionaire Koch brothers, who are seeking to help Republicans take over the Senate, have spent about $30 million in the last six months.

The group will zero in on 15 target states, from places like Colorado and Washington State, where gun control initiatives have advanced recently, to territory that is likely to be more hostile like Texas, Montana and Indiana. They have set a goal of signing up one million new supporters this year on top of the 1.5 million they already have.

So $50 million against Dems, plus $20 million mostly to Repubs plus on track $60 million to swaying the Senate to Repubs. Yeah this is a good thing

At least they are dropping the fiction the Mom's Demand Action is anything but another front organization
The plans call for a restructuring of the gun control groups he funds, Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. They will be brought under one new umbrella group called Everytown for Gun Safety.

Then again, he is doing God's work
“I am telling you if there is a God, when I get to heaven I’m not stopping to be interviewed. I am heading straight in. I have earned my place in heaven. It’s not even close.”

It means the gun control fans can sit on their couch (and checkbooks) for another year and count on him to pay for the heavy lifting via his in house PR firm and some unlimited donations.

Sure. he'll dump a few Dems from office if they don't obey his dictates on where they stand on gun control salt use and the size of sodas.

But that's OK with some folks here I guess, as long as he tries to elect anti gun politicians in red states, who cares if they actually win . As long as the "massive" gun control movement here doesn't have to use any of their own time or money.

I'm guessing Bloomie misread the Colorado situation and will try again to buy seats for a handful of favorites, like he did in the Illinois 2nd Congressional district special election primary.

Mom's Demand Action was "supposed" to be a grass roots group, like the old Millions Mom March, a real kitchen table revolution. Now like the MMM, it's fading into his bought and paid for Mayors (not currently serving time) Against Guns group.

But it's nice to know he's now a religious leader as well, with an E-Ticket straight past the pearly gates. No waiting for a man with money now, that whole "camel through the eye of a needle" thing is no longer operative I guess.

Hey, maybe they can try to suppress a Democratic fundraiser.

Again.

Almost a year ago, in the aftermath of the shootings in Newtown, Conn., a number of entertainment industry activists decried a vote that prevented the Senate from moving forward background check legislation. Some vowed to withhold support from Democrats who voted “No,” including Sen. Mark Begich (D-Alaska) and Sen. Mark Pryor (D-Ark.), both of whom are in the midst of tough reelection races...

...In a letter sent to Cindy Horn on Wednesday afternoon, the groups urged her to cancel the fundraiser, or, in the alternative, that they instead raise funds for Senate candidates in tough races who voted for the background checks, including Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.), Sen. Kay Hagan (D-N.C.), Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) and Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colo.).

The groups, including Women Against Gun Violence, the California Chapters of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, the Violence Prevention Coalition and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, wrote to Horn that “when Senators from far-flung places come to California to fuel their campaigns, we hope that you will remind them that you’re not their personal ATM. You have a right to ask why they deserve their support...

...The groups asked in their letter, ”Is ‘Democrat’ merely a box on a ballot, to be checked at any cost?”

So is Bloomberg. He is a Republican, his efforts in the CO recalls succeeded in getting 2 other Republicans elected and a third Democrat to resign and his group has actively worked against other Democrats.
