Ex-Penn cop charged with bringing gun into fed building
AN EX-COP WHO lost his job at the University of Pennsylvania will undergo a mental-competency evaluation after he walked into the FBI field office in Center City this week with a loaded gun and falsely claimed to still be a cop.
Melvin Anthony Ramos entered the federal building on 6th Street near Arch about 4:45 p.m. Monday. He was able to pass through the lobby security with his firearm after he allegedly identified himself as a police officer.
On the eighth floor, after Ramos showed an FBI receptionist a Penn police ID card and "badge," a duty agent allowed him to keep his gun, according to an FBI affidavit. Ramos, 55, told agents he wanted to file a complaint against Penn police and said he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, the affidavit says.
"Ramos seemed agitated, frequently answered questions by digressing to unrelated matters, and referenced the suicide of another [Penn] police officer multiple times," the affidavit says.
