I'll Register My Drone When You Have to Register Your Gun

For the past half-dozen months, I've owned and operated a tiny quadcopter that I built from parts sourced online. It's only 110 millimeters wide, weighs about one pound, has a very small camera, and is more likely to be blown into a tree by a mild breeze than injure anyone.

And as of next week, I will need to register my dinky little drone with the federal government. Otherwise, I could potentially face civil and criminal penalties of up to $250,000 and three years in prison.

Meanwhile, if I decided to relocate to the nearby state of New Hampshire, I'd be able to purchase and own an assault rifle with a high-capacity magazine—no registration or license required.

That's because I live in the United States, a country that will soon have a national registry for toy helicopters, but not for deadly machines used to commit horrifying mass-murder on a near-daily basis.

Probably already a NDA, considering the droning on & on by some posters here. Eleanors38 Dec 2015 #9

Will register a drone. Should we through them all in jail like they say if you fail to register a weapon. I do not expect an answer as you never comment on your near 1000 Google Drive by posts.

for the last week. Everyone is having a shit fit because after years of discussions with the FAA they make this knee jerk decision based on media hype because anyone anywhere can buy an aircraft that pretty much flies itself. In understand the lure and the risks. It's a lot of fun to go out and tear up the sky. I pay dues to an organization that sanctions my activity and insures me for liability if something goes wrong and I do harm. Even that comes with major restrictions. I can only fly at designated sites and must follow safety guidelines to minimize risk. If I screw up I can be sanctioned. Those of us who have gotten into model aviation though this traditional path are already known quantities. We joined an organization, paid our dues, and made ourselves known.

To me the gun humper who insists that there be no restrictions on ownership of an intentionally deadly device are far worse than the stupid shit who can buy a device that can be a lot of fun until it's not.

When they start restricting your drone ownership, not just requiring registration, based on having a black drone or one with a power source that allows it to stay up for more than 5 minutes then you are entering gun 'solutions' driven by hype.

Out of curiosity, what's your solution to the problem of rouge drone flyers? I assume, not banning drones.

"No restrictions"? C'mon now. You know better than that -- or should.

Arbitrary and meaningless regulation? Welcome to my world. Pretty soon they'll be calling you a "drone humper."

Can you say "knee jerk decision based on media hype"? I knew that you could.

You can call me anything you like. My planes and guns are for my own enjoyment but if they posed a risk to others that I couldn't control, they would both be gone.

Always under my control. They have never harmed anything but paper plates while I have owned them. I follow all safety precautions and they are locked up while not in use. So am I a gun humper?
