This Town Is Encouraging Teachers To Carry Guns.

This Town Is Encouraging Teachers To Carry Guns. Here's Their Reasoning.
Do you feel safe yet?

A small rural town in Oklahoma has decided that the best way to prevent a hypothetical mass shooting at their schools is to arm teachers with guns.

"If a shooting situation were to happen, which we pray it never will, seconds matter," he said.

Along with having a concealed carry permit, teachers participating in the program must have a certificate from Oklahoma's Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training, receive a psychiatric evaluation and take a shooting course three times a year.

Participating teachers must have their weapon on them or secured in a lockbox, according to the policy. The guns must be .45 caliber or less. And McMahan said they must be "name brand" guns.

Any thoughts?

Is the district going to force him/her to carry?

I sense that that is what is coming in some Deep Red parts of the country.

I read Nothing which suggested encouragement; in fact, the requirements for carrying a weapon seem rather strict.

But Narratives® are just that: Give a one-liner that neutralizes the entire text. No one will notice.

but I would be willing to bet a psycho will bypass this school.

I believe their requirements are stricter than most police departments:

Along with having a concealed carry permit, teachers participating in the program must have a certificate from Oklahoma's Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training, receive a psychiatric evaluation and take a shooting course three times a year.

Think it is a good idea, especially since the training requirements are pretty high. Don't think it should be required but should be optional.

My thought is deployment at 400 foot intervals with a mix of uniformed OC and plain clothes CC.

Kids can be really horrible, and provocative. Who knows, imagine if a student or a bunch of students got on the bad side of a particular teacher who happened to be carrying a firearm. Could end in disaster.

...this town's program to encourage armed teachers.

I searched a bit and didn't find any articles about teachers that killed students, at least not in the US. I'm going to ask the teacher who replied in this thread if he knows or has met any other teachers who he considers potentially violent.

it's also a concern as just as a teacher has the capability to use the firearm in whatever which way, a student or students could gang up on a teacher to steal the weapon.

I would like to see some staff armed and I like the idea of dedicated armed security as well as some non-teaching staff. Concealed carry would be my preference. I like the idea of having school police and/or having police stations or substations near or adjacent to schools, especially larger schools and middle/high schools.

Senior high schools with 18 year olds would need different strategies and different types of security measures than K-4 schools.

Most schools live by the "it's better to be a victim" motto.

It's sad when people are intimidated into being defenseless.
