Gun Control & RKBA
Related: About this forum1.74 million gun background checks done in February. On target for 18 million in 2011!!
At least 1.74 million guns sold in October! It was the 2nd biggest month in the history of the NICS system since it was implemented in 1998! And the largest February in history.
Maybe more, because some background checks equal more than one gun sold. And many states do not require background checks for CCW license holders. This also does not count private sales that bypass the NICS system.
More armed Americans than ever and the crime and murder rate continues to fall!
And now Illinois is the only state does does now allow CCW. I have a feeling they might fall this year!
Once us Democrats stop fighting this, the sooner the GOP and NRA can stop using it against us! The NRA is already trying to beat up Obama about guns. If the Dems stop attacking guns then the NRA loses its power to attack great Dems.
The bad guys will ALWAYS have guns. Why would anyone want to prevent the good guys from having them?

(7,981 posts)Some gun owners undergo multiple checks, which could lead to inflated sales estimates, said Caroline Brewer, a spokeswoman for the Brady Campaign.Kentucky, she said, runs fresh background checks monthly on owners with concealed-weapon permits.
There might not be a growing number of gun owners, Brewer said: "Fewer and fewer people have more and more guns. Twenty percent of gun owners possess about 65 percent of the guns. . . . They're stockpiling."

(212 posts)which I seriously doubt, the American public has largely turned away from gun control.
The political climate is totally different than it was in the late 80's/early 90's.

that is a different system than NICS. In some states, CCW permit holders do have NICS checks done because those states like Kentucky do a good job on keeping eligible lists current. I think we both agree that Michigan can learn something from Kentucky and Texas in that regard.
might not be does not mean not. What is she basing that on? Not that Brady talking points are bullshit, but propaganda talking points normally are. Even if she is half way correct, so what? The concern should not be how many guns, but who has the guns.

(1,372 posts)"Fewer and fewer people have more and more guns. Twenty percent of gun owners possess about 65 percent of the guns. . . . They're stockpiling."
The first sentence defys logic. People decide to own a gun. They buy the for a variety of reasons. Once you own a gun there is very little reason to get rid of all your guns (you seem to always have one that you keep). As time goes on more and more people decide to own guns so the number probably keeps increasing.
When I belonged to a pistol club just about every member had more than one pistol. I would say the average was about 6-10. In a shooting club people were involved in a variety of competitive shooting events. this means you had many different types of pistols and rifles and shotguns for different types of competition.
It appears that the statement was made to justify the idea that people were "stockpiling" weapons. this makes people think that there are groups of people who are getting ready for some sort of revolt for which they are amassing and arsenal and so to insite fear in the public. This is just more of the Brady scare tactics.

(49,445 posts)If memory serves, at least. You need to get a permit to purchase from the sheriff's office. They had a week to find cause to refuse to issue it.

(16,038 posts)the nation's largest grassroots organization for gun-violence prevention.
Here, I'll fix that..
'self proclaimed as the nation's largest grassroots organization for gun-violence prevention.'
The actual 'nation's largest grassroots organization for gun-violence prevention', is much more likely the NRA who have backed nearly every gun control bill which has made the books in the last 80 years or so. Of coarse their teaching more people gun safety than any other entity on the planet goes to their 'gun violence prevention' too.
