Gun Control & RKBA
Related: About this forumIt may not be relevant to RKBA but,
seems it is less about SYG and more about campaign finance with a little race on the side. I found this in GD.
First, it turns out that Zimmerman's dad, a retired Virginia judge, apparently belongs to the 1 percent. He now lives in an upscale town adjacent to the scene of the killing, Sanford Florida.
This family tie turns out to be the likely reason George Zimmerman was not arrested, even though lead homicide investigator Chris Serino (spelling?) submitted an affadavit concluding that Zimmerman should be charged with at least manslaughter.
On the Sunday night of the shooting, Chief of Police Bill Lee went to the scene of the shooting and apparently overruled his lead homicide investigator and prevented Zimmerman's arrest. The Chief apparently consulted State's Attorney Norman Wolfinger, who's running for re-election.
So in this case, it seems that the rank and file is not a problem, but the head dude?

Held anonymously without charge, trial, or communication with the outside world.
The President's press secretary says that people should watch what they say, or else - and the press is too afraid to say anything.
People are prevented from traveling freely because they are on a gov't list.

Trying to conflate the two is RW propaganda.
Are you laboring under the impression there's some other Michael Bloomberg? Because the one I've been reading about here
at DU doesn't seem all that "progressive" to me:

Mayor Bloomberg: I Have My Own Army
By Hunter Walker 10:06am
In a speech at MIT last night to discuss the packed sweepstakes to build a tech campus in New York City, Mayor Bloomberg said he prefers City Hall to the White House. Almost immediately after Mayor Bloomberg dampened recent speculation hes eyeing a White House bid, he added fuel to the fire by explaining why a mayor would be the best person for the job.
Mayor Bloombergs recent criticism of President Obama for allowing the debt reduction Supercommittee to fail led many political tea leaf watchers to believe hes eyeing a potential White House bid. To the dismay of those who hope hell mount presidential campaign, Mayor Bloomberg began his speech last night by discussing why City Hall is just fine by him.
I have my own army in the NYPD, which is the seventh biggest army in the world. I have my own State Department, much to Foggy Bottoms annoyance. We have the United Nations in New York, and so we have an entree into the diplomatic world that Washington does not have, Mayor Bloomberg said....

And what has "his" army been doing? Why, investigating people for their political beliefs!- a practice you used to decry...

The AP (via CBS) notes that undercover cops went to liberal political groups' meetings, building intel files on activists and protesters.
The newswire says that interviews and docs collected during the investigation "show how police have used counterterrorism tactics to monitor even lawful activities."
The AP points out that the NYPD used these same tactics in 2004, when the department monitored church, environmental, and anti-war groups in the U.S., claiming these policies were necessary to prep for the GOP convention.
But these methods continued far after the convention took place: in 2008, the NYPD's super-secret intel department sent an undercover officer to attend the People's Summit in New Orleans. The project report gathered information on two U.S. activists, journalist Jordan Flaherty and labor organizer Marisa Franco, the AP notes....

The US government bought them so as not to leave Remington holding the bag. The "American Mosin" is a rare and collectible rifle anyway, but can you imagine the value of one that was owned by FDR? Hmm ...

(15,333 posts)In the meantime you and those that feel as you do are perfectly free to not carry firearms.
if more people carrying guns does does not lead to more gun violence, why should you care? After all, it's the gun violence that concerns you, right? Or do you simply want to disarm people because you don't like guns?
You have never been safer. Put aside your fear.
baldguy
(36,649 posts)For the vast majority of the country, anyway. There is no conceivable reason for your boy George Zimmerman to have been carrying a gun.
And in places where gun violence IS a problem, more guns - coming from irresponsible jurisdictions with lax gun laws - only make things worse.
hack89
(39,171 posts)even in high crime areas, gun violence has shown a long steady decline since the 1990's. Two decades of gun controller warnings of blood in the street have not come to fruition.
BTW - "because" is a perfectly acceptable reason when it comes to civil liberties. That's the beauty of them - you don't have to justify exercising them to the state - "need" is totally irrelevant.

(17,502 posts)and in places were the laws are very strict. Did DC and Chicago murder rates drop in murder after their handgun bans? Did repealing South Carolina's handgun ban in 1965 cause murder skyrocket there?

(39,171 posts)that protect people from bad things happening to them. There will always be individual tragedies like this. The question is whether society, in the balance, is harmed or not. There are people that are alive today because they had guns to protect themselves and their families. Don't they count too?

It would explain how Zimmerman's assaulting a cop and domestic violence charges disappearing. Had the latter not disappeared and he were convicted, possessing a gun would come a federal felony.
